oK let me get something straight here.... in about one week i am going to start growing some B+. I have been studying alot of the techniques and I thought i was ready to start. BUT, about 15 minutes ago i read that when growing, shrooms only need 5-15 minutes per day. IS THAT RIGHT??? i heard they need 6-8 hours per day.(see 'The Quart Jar Way-Revisited' in the growing section on this site)

Does it make a difference on what kind of lights you use??

Someone please help me as it would be a HUGE waste if i f***-ed up all my little men. thanks.

cubensis is a photo tropic species, meaning that they grow toward or in response to light.

this is only important to know for what is refered to as the initiation strategy, which for cubies is not difficult, they are very forgiving.

in the life cycle of mycelium, after the substrate has been fully engulfed, the cells need to be triggered into thinking that its time to make babies. many mushrooms have evolved complicated mechanisms for telling that the wet season is about to come and that its time to spread spores. often this involves a drop in temperature and a decrease in the number of hours of light per day, anoung other things. for cubbies it is just light that does the triggering.

in the traditional pf cake tek, it was originally thought that it was necessary to keep the cakes in the dark untill 100 percent coverage was achieved. in the pf method, the jar becomes engulfed so fast, that it has been repeatedly shown not to matter in uncontaminated substrates. so if i have space, i put the incubating jars right in with the terrariums, which recieve very indirect reflected sunlight for as much time as God sees fit to let it shine. after all, he has been at this a lot longer than i have.
