Can you do PF Tek w/ A rice steamer??
    #3864791 - 03/03/05 10:10 PM (11 years, 8 months ago)

Hey,

A friend of mine and myself are about to have our first go at cultivation. We are using the PF tek and I was wondering if a Rice Cooker could be used for the steam sterilization?? Its a 10 cup rice cooker w/ a seal lid that steams rice in give or take 20 minutes (its a set cycle) but multiple cycles could be used to reach the desired time.

Here is a link to the exact cooker. http://store.yahoo.com/dotcoms/ar10ricowigl.html

Another question. If the cooker is no good we will be traditionally boiling them in a pot, i was wondering if it is ok to stack jars in the pot or not.

Thanks,
Matt

it should work for pf tek but why not buy a p cooker. Then you can move one to bigger things once you master the pf tek

heh heh, i sense a missunderstanding .  The reason I asked about the rice cooker is there is one on the counter in our kitchen all ready, so we are planning to use it.  THe class project is simply showing how to make a culture jar (we are actually making 12 jars, with some special sauce to put in them of course).

In fact, we are working on the tek RIGHT NOW thats why i asked.

Thanks for the fast replies.

That will work fine for the PF tek. Steam for 90 minutes if using 1/2 pints or pints. I did these bowls the same way, but 105 minutes.

They were nocked up 7 days ago with Karo culture containing the OI strain.

Grand, the 5 jars we put in the pot all ended up cracking at the bottom, they aren't ver severe cracks and I think the jars may still be inoculable, but we will see, probably setting myself up for contam.

The 7 that were in the rice cooker did just fine. Both were steamed for 90 minutes.

Damnit.... stupid n00bs

Does the extent of the cracks have anything to do with that? The substrates w/ in are still dry (as dry as when they went in anyway) and the jars are still together, there are just pressure cracks (or heat) around the bottom of the jars.

The rice cooker also seemed to allow a lot of moisture into a few of the jars, I had foil over all the tops, but a few are a bit more moist than others, however, I don't think it will be an issue. I read the "loose or tight" faq so I know what's up there.

Thanks for the input guys. Shroomery members are on the ball!

every fricken time I have a jar crack on the bottom...they contam.

usually I forget to check for cracks before knocking them up...which pisses me off...when I do that.

Quart jars...the cracks are very small and almost circular on the bottom...seems like I always get the same pattern...wonder why?

I haven't had one crack in awhile now...that gets costly.

good luck to ya!~

Yeah, and at least I did a dozen so I have 7 potential cakes still and plenty of spores to go around.

I might still try 1 or 2 of the cracked jars though just for experimentals.

BTW, I was using the KERR 1/2 Pints and they all got circular cracks as well, some were longer than others.

When you're using a large pot to steam brf substrates in 1/2 or 1 pints. The heat only needs to be on simmer or a notch above. 2-3 on most stoves is plenty. You just want to maintain a light steaming action. If you steam these type of jars on medium to high, especially if they are sitting directly on the pot withou a stand off plate, they will crack for some weird reason. I can't even pc my 1 pints without them cracking. I don't know why, because they are CANNING jars.

Yeah, You only need a little bit of water in a cooker because the water condenses off the lid and back to the bottom of it. About 1/4 to 1/2 inch of water is plenty.
