Question about MP3 Players..
    #3841116 -

I have begun the search for an MP3 Player, and one thing confuses me. How does GBs and MBs translate to hours of music?

Also, if anybody has any suggestions as to what kind to buy?

I'm gonna buy an Ipod 40 gig. It holds up to 10,000 4 minute songs, and is just barely larger than the 20 gig.

20 gigs don't come with the recharging dock however, and those cost ike 50 bucks or something,

so for 50 dollars more you get the 40 gig with the dock included and twice as much memory.

I don't understand how the whole conversion thing works (MP3, WMA and so forth), myself but my kids have Rio players and I've helped set them up and download music from time to time and they seem to work quite nicely. I haven't bought one myself because the ones they have aren't available any longer and the IPods are way too expensive and I don't think the interface is as easy as everyone claims it to be (I have several friends and family members that own them). Also, IMO, the fact that you have to hang them around your neck, with the wires hanging all around (like in the TV ads) is not attractive to me. The Rio can be clipped on your belt or (better for me) they have a wrist band they clip into for when you are working out or hiking or whatever (besides dancing around as a silouette on a psychedlic background). I also like using standard batteries as opposed to built in rechargable types. When the built in types go bad, you're screwed and if you want, you can use rechargable batteries instead of disposable. I hate it that my Palm Pilot has the built in type because it is already acting weird about taking a full charge and going from full charge (display) to completely crashing because the battery went dead.

it depends on bitrate, the majority of 2-3min songs are like 2-3mb but they can be like 8mb too if the encoded at a high rate. easiest way would be to just hover your mouse over your music folder and see the size of it. and don't get an ipod, they're overpriced garbage. they are restricted so you have to use itunes and you cannot copy songs from your ipod to other computers and you can't use them as portable hdd's. i can't understand why anyone with half a brain would get an ipod over like an iriver or similar that dosn't have restrictions and can store any file type. with the iRiver H-320/40 you can get the korean firmware and watch .avi's with it. plays .ogg files, built in fm radio, can record fm radio, has built in mic you can record stuff with, you replace the battery yourself, 20 or 40gb hdd ect. ect. so much better than a gaypod.

if you don't need the picture viewer and all that they sell cheaper ones as well that are still way better than the gaypod.

Yeah don't buy a shIt-Pod. Do some research, about the only advice I can give.

I went with the rio karma. Mostly for gapless playback and excellent sound quality. Don't buy one without an extended warrenty though, they have alot of problems.

I'm happy as shit becuase just 10 minutes ago I resolderd a flaky headphone jack. Now it works 100% except for the hold button I snapped off being careless. Oh well never used it anyway.
