cottony vs. rhysomorphic mycelia causes?
    #3824331 - 02/23/05 10:10 PM (13 years, 2 months ago)

what causes cottony mycelia growth? is it a a genetic characteristic or is it dependent upon environmental conditions???
I have three jars of rye grain all growing cottony with very little signs of rhyso. should this be spawned to bulk?

rhizo is better. Its faster growing and tends to have a better pin set. When spores germinate on a petri or jar about 75% is cotton and the rest rhizomorphic. You can spawn to bulk.

rhizomorphic growth of a strain that was isolated twice from spores. So #1 spores. #2 rhizomorphic isolate, #3 picture- about as isoated as it gets.

A petri #1 spores on a petri, still cottony. This strain doesnt go very rhizomorphic on agar. Note on left of pic the hazy looking area right next to the cotton. That is mycelium growing inside the agar. Mycelium not only grows on top but throughout the agar.

A shiitake isolate from my shiitake kit. Rhizos from wood lovers tend to grow cottony on agar even after one isolates. They go rhizomorphic on wood.

a little of both. wood lovers tend to me cottony on agar but rhizomorphic on wood. But in general genetics cause the different mycels. Thats why we isolate the good genes a=to get rhizomorphic mycelium
