First-timer planning to go shroom hunting in BC
    #376578 - 08/22/01 06:54 PM (16 years, 2 months ago)

I'm making preparations for my first 'shroom hunt, and was just wondering if anyone more experienced could look over some of my notes and correct me where I've gone wrong. I don't have any books and haven't visisted a library yet (I've only been researching this 3 or 4 days), but this is what I've come up with so far:

According to several popular sites (The sites where I got all of my information from, actually) there are around 12 well-known species of psylocibes growing in the Pacific Northwest area, including BC. Unfortunately, it's only August so only 5 are already in season:

Psylocibe baeocystis
Psylocibe liniformans
Psylocibe semilanceata
Psylocibe stuntzii
Psylocibe sierrae

Now, liniformans and stuntzii both contain very low quantities of psilocybin (.16 and .36, respectively) and thus are very low potency, so it seems to me that my best bet lies in either baeocystis or semilanceata. The problem with this is that some people at the Shroomery have suggested that either of those don't start appearing until September in my area. I still live with my parents, by the way, so much as I'd love to cultivate them I'll only do it if I'm unable to find any in the wild.

Next there's the weather to take into consideration. It's been raining here since yesterday and is supposed to continue well into Friday, although by then it should start clearing up. Saturday is forecasted to be completely dry, as is Sunday, but that's as far as weather.ca will tell me. So, should I head out Saturday or wait a couple of days after the rain stops?

Lastly there's the area that I've chosen (well, not really chosen-- I live here). The town is Pitt Meadows (I realize it's not smart to post my exact location on a forum like this, but I'm naming it in hopes of someone sharing their experiences with gathering in this area), and it's wedged between Coquitlam and Maple Ridge on either side, about an hour's drive east of Vancouver. But if you live anywhere near here you already know that :) What we have here is basically a lot of cow and horse pastures, and a dike running through a riverside forested area. Seems perfect to me, but if necessary I could make the bike ride to Maple Ridge or Coquitlam. I'd rather avoid that if at all possible, as biking an hour or two each way in the pouring rain isn't exactly my idea of fun.

Basically that's all I've got, I'm eagerly awaiting input on my choice of species/weather/area from you guys!

im not familiar with your area at all and im not a professional at hunting either but i would imagine that paneleous subbalteatus probably grow in bc..check the horse pastures and rotted hay stacks..there are many good pictures on here that other members have posted recently..peace

If there were no rewards to reap,
No loving embrace to see me through
This tedious path I've chosen here,
I certainly would've walked away by now.
Gonna wait it out.

Pan subbs are probably in your area as suggested, and possibly some of the more obscure panaeolus species(i.e.papilionaceus).Psilocybe cyanescens, pelliculosa, silvatica and strictipes may be in your area, but they may be later in the season, although I would still look for these also. Psylocibe baeocystis from what I've read and seen here at the Shroomery, can sometimes be tough to ID.It's also very hard to cultivate.I'm not sure if anyone has actually ever succeeded in cultivating that species (of course that doesn't mean it's impossible). You may want to read up and learn to ID the Galerinas. They inhabit some of the same areas as some of the psilocybes, and can be confused with the psilocybes. Some of the Galerinas are deadly.
B.C., from what I can tell, seems to be good magic mushroom country.
Be patient,be safe, and good luck. And always take a sporeprint to be sure.
I would recommend getting an Audubon mushroom field guide, and possibly Paul Stamets book, Psilocybe Mushrooms of the World or one of Mj's books. They're worth the cost and good reading also.

Thanks guys for your input; I've decided to go hunting Saturday, if the weather predictions hold out. SmokeDogg, I've sent you a PM :)

I dont know what you are planning on finding on saturday, the season is right around the corner, but it is definatly not time to start looking for much yet... Your best bet right now would probably goto nice lawns (golf courses, parks, schools, appartment buildings etc.) for P. Stuntzii (blue ringers), i have not been fortunate enough this summer to find any but good luck!

As for season time, i would reccomend searching far and wide for P. semilanceata (liberty caps), Search for these in cow pastures, they will not be growing directly out of the dung, so you have to look all around, they are also in parks, fields etc....

Next, search for cyans, these can be found in bark shavings and mulch in later fall, but be carfull because if i am correct there are two look alike species for these mushrooms galerina and one other, and they are microscopically different (i suppose the main difference is the spore print, but dont quote me on this).

I wouldnt waiste my time going out to cow fields before september, granted that the best mushroom picking for all these mushrooms usually is much after...

P.S. I am not saying it is impossible to find these mushrooms right now, but your chances are extremely against you..

Good luck if you decide to go, and dont get down in the dumps if you dont find any mushies...
