Average yield per jar
    #3759717 - 02/10/05 01:49 AM (12 years, 8 months ago)

After putting a lot of effort into my project, I'm curious as to what yield can be expected. I'm using jars filled with organic rye. Cased with peat moss, vermiculite and sand. Each jar is filled with 2/3 cup of rye and 1 cup of water. The dry weight of the rye is approx. 120 grams. According to a book I've got, each jar gives approx. 10 grams dry weight of mushrooms for each 100 grams dry weight of rye. Does this mean I'll get roughly 12 grams per jar? Or is the book a little off (it is in several other respects). Thanks for the advice.

Well, I have not experimented with rye nor read that many yields off of it. However I can tell you that you will not get 10 dry grams off of 100 grams of rye. 10 dry grams of mushrooms is 100 wet grams and I would not imagine that you will get that much off of a single jar (what are you using? pints?) But that may be possible with casing but seems like a lot.

There is no "average yield" there are too many factors. If this is your first time growing, I would estimate you will get about half as much as an experienced grower would get with the same amount of substrate, just too many variables that you won't be used to.

The only estimate for "average yield" is with the pf tek jars of BRF and verm, yielding about 2-5 g dry per cake for a 1/2 pint. Cased substrates can yield as much as twice the amount a cake can. Rye will probably yield more than BRF. So I would imagine your yield would be "ideally" 5-12 grams per jar cased. I would actually probably estimate less than that, so maybe 3-8 grams per jar?

Getting 20 grams dry P. cubensis of 100 g dry rye is no magic, it is very common actually if not average.

what smush is saying is correct, the term you want is called biological
efficiencey, that b would be a yeald of 1:1 in substrate to mushroom in weight,
its what we all strive for but rarely ever get. there are too many variables to
list that can affect the outcome of your project, expect about 1/3 of the weight
of your substrate if you follow instructions to the letter and have no problems
with contamination...

This is disappointing to say the least! The book by Oss and Oeric is off in so many respects. Through trial and error I learned that their water to rye ratio is off, their timelines are off and now I've discovered that their yield estimates are off too. That book definitely needs to be updated! 4-5 grams per jar is half what I was expecting.

But it's not.
It's 15-20 grams per 100 g dry rye with P. cubensis.

You can increase your yeild tremendously by using your colonized Rye Grains to inoculate bulk substrates.

Example...1 to 5 ratio...1 jar of colonized Rye grain spawned(mixed)to 5 parts horse poo.
Let that colonize after spawning...you just increased that 1 jar of Rye 5 times.

The more jars and horse manure used...the larger the bulk substrate.
The larger the bulk substrate...the larger the yeild.

Good luck!~

Now I'm very confused. 15-20 grams per jar would be a dream yield! 4-5 grams would be disappointing. There is so much conflicting advice out there it's hard to know what to believe..not only on the forums, but the books I've read are also at odds with one another when yield is discussed.

Look.....
When you are doing the pf tek, using the standard formula, you yield ~5 g dry per 1/2 pint jar.
In one jar, according to the standard formula, there is 40 ml of BRF.
If you weigh out 40 ml BRF you will find out it weighs ~25 grams.

So, from 25 grams BRF you harvest 5 gram dry mushrooms.
This means from 100 grams BRF you harvest 20 grams dry mushrooms.
Same as I told you for rye.

You can believe who you want of course.....

Here is an ingredient analysis of a PF cake for anyone interested:

Volume [cc] Weight [g] Relative moisture
Vermiculite 140 16 (37+2.5)/(16+37+(25-2.5)
= 52 %
Water 37 37
BRF 40 25

Thanks very much Anno. I'm unsure simply because of my newbie status..I have much more experience with the green. I've found that the green is actually much more straightforward than the shrooms. After all, critters like mites and aphids can be delt with much more easily than bacteria and moulds. With shrooms, there's an invisible enemy that is everywhere. This is definitely a hobby which requires patience. I'll find out for myself about the yield soon enough.

If you ever are looking for who to trust for advise, look under their names, the blue mushrooms. Click them and check the ratings people give them. You can tell how much you can trust advice by that sometimes. Of course no rating system is perfect but ya know.

Rye...A quart jar yeilds me about 2 ounces over ~3 flushes. A pint would be half that, I think thats what 100 ml is. It depends VERY much on many factors though. Sometimes you get more sometimes less, and it can vary by a good amount.. Just do you best not worrying about yeilds and concentrate on using every grow as a learning experience and the yeild will come.
