Casing Without A Terrarium
    #372373 - 08/15/01 01:46 PM (23 years, 1 month ago)

Any experience out there in casing sans Terrarium? The plan essentially is to use a 'tall' plastic container so as to accomodate the height of the mushrooms, and just leave it on a shelf. Planning on removing the lid for a couple hours daily (after, of course, the mycelium has established itself) to mist/circulate fresh air and keep under a lamp. Then replace the lid and put back into storage.

Is this going to work? What kind of casing mediums should I use to maintain humidity without a terrarium? Perlite?

Thanks for any info/wisdom/experiences you can share.

It will work, but not as good as a casing in a terrarium...
Why not just get a smal terrarium? You case in a small plastic container, then you put this into a container that's a bit larger... It's almost the same as your idea.

Also, removing the lid for a few hours a day won't do you any good. Instead, remove the lid several times a day for very short times (like 2-3 minutes) while you fan the casing like crazy and mist if needed. And I wouldn't keep it directly under a lamp. This will cause the casing to go dry. Just keep it in a lighted room. As long as you can "see' the casing, then that's enought light; they don't need a big light shining directly on them, just a hint of light...

Without a terrarium, the humidity is going to be coming from your casing. Use vermiculite, like you would normally as the bottom layer. Top layer can be anything like verm/coco/etc. I don't think perlite is that great of an idea, but ask someone else who's sure...

Make a terrarium!
