PF cakes (Casings) are prone to dehydration. I suggest a fruiting environment. This is true with all kinds of casings though. You want the ambient moisture to be at least 90%.

I disagree with the moisture thing. I keep them covered out in the open and fan/mist once a day. About 70%-75% rH -- too much humidity can lead to cobweb.

Just my opinion.

It's possible to do it without a terrarium. You can make a single casing terrarium by using a casing container with high sides... then covering the top of it with plastic wrap. I have heard of successful casings just left out in the open, but they would dry out faster. You should use Jiffy mix and not verm, jiffy mix is alot better and is ready to use strait out of the bag. =).

That's what I use -- saran wrap. Never had a problem.

Chamber of some sort is best ....
1) Allows some control of a proper environment ie temp , humidity...
2) minimizes chance of air born contams settling on cakes
3) Just plain ol smart
Good Luck

>too much humidity can lead to cobweb.

Stale conditions can lead to cobweb, not the humidity itself.

I've read it's favoured by both low airflow and high humidity.

Low airflow causing stagnant air pockets where contaminants can breed.

That sounds reasonable.
