I'm contemplating on installing the SP2 update, but I first want some feedback from you guys on what your opinions/problems concerning SP2 are. Before I do the actual update.
You're feedback will be appreciated.

I haven't had any problems with it... some people have had problems until they turn off the firewall part with some peer to peer programs.

It gets worse and worse. Goodbye raw sockets, by the way. A lot of older applications may have trouble because of DEP. *shakes head*
My opinion on Windows XP SP2? Horrid. Leave for *n?x post-haste.

SP2 hasn't provided any noticable problems for me. it seemed more like a fix for dumbassitis. one big plus is the ability to update a new install with a single patch as opposed to dozens. i'm getting really tired of updating my slipstreamed install disk.

It gave me problems. I use VPN to connect to clients and it fucked that up. I had to turn off the firewall (I don't need it anyway) by going into services, disabling it and shutting it down. But every time I add a new network connection, window turns it back on. So after disabling and shutting down again, I then ran the following command in the run box... "sc delete Windows Firewall/Internet Connection Sharing (ICS)" this removes the references to it in the registry so Windblows won't keep turning it back on.
I also ran into problems when I ran the system file checker program from the run box... "Sfc /Scannow" The program will ask for your XP installation CD to repair corrupted/bad files but when I tried this it told me that I had the wrong installation disk (because I had installed SP2).
** edit ** Another thing. With SP2, I can no longer see my print server on my home office network. I had to change my print server to a static IP and re-install my printer by putting it's network location in manually because XP could not find it on the network.
Oh, FUCK WINBLOWS. I only use the piece of shit operating system because I have to be compatible with my clients and some only have Client software or VPN software that will run on XP (I program on Mid-range systems).

I've heard that's true. However, it's never given me any problems. I understand it patches some security holes in IE, so if you use that browser, you may want to consider getting it....

sp2 is just fine. just modify the services so that the security center bs is disabled. oh, and if you use p2p, you need to tweak the tcp connections - ms limited it to curb p2p. if you're interested, I'll post the link.
oh, yeah - I recommend slipstreaming sp2 rather than just installing it ontop of your prexisting windows installation.

Please give me a link on how to make such a cd. (The way you do it, or give me a link to download the ISO file)

for services to disable, visit blackviper.com - security center, windows firewall - disable those.
for tcp tweak: http://www.lvllord.de
for slipstreaming: http://www.autopatcher.com/autostreamer.html download the sp2 file and use autostreamer to put the disc together.

Will try your fix, bi0.

Thanks.
The Autostreamer in your link can't be found (404 error) . Is there another place you can think of to find it? I googled already.
Is nlite as good?

For one thing it's safer. It won't run ActiveX controls which, when maliciously used, can really mess up your computer - at least so I understand. It's also less bloated, runs a bit faster, and isn't a much of a resource hog as IE. It's also a lot more functional, thanks to the extensions feature. I especially like the tabbed browsing feature, which, as far as I know, IE lacks. Be that as it may, you still need IE to get the updates for Windows. I'm not exactly sure why that is. Of course, FF is far from perfect. They still have some bugs to work out...

But I did expect to see some improvement. Boy, was I wrong. Yes, some things are better, but there are also a slew of new, exciting security concerns.
For example, it's possible in some situations for a worm to spoof the WSC (Windows Security Center) into making it appear that your system is fine and dandy when it's actually been turned into, say, a spam-producing zombie from heck.
Or, worse still, there's the hole that enables would-be attackers to use Internet Explorer's drag-and-drop feature to trick users into allowing various malware programs onto their PCs.

Yes, IE is chock full of security holes isn't it? And so is Outlook. They're both pieces of crap IMO, really. I've never used Outlook ever, and IE is only good for getting Windows updates, and that's it...

I tweaked the hell out of XP before installing SP2. It was some pre sp2 tweak GUI.
I had no problems with SP2. I used sygate pro instead of the windows firewall. I don't think I'd trust it anyways.

everything.
firefox is customizable more secure wide selection of extensions and themes has hundreds of available search engines renders sites more correctly and often faster than IE constantly updated (the latest version of IE is now 3 years old) greater support (great mozilla forums: forums.mozillazine.org ) opensource tabs (tab browsing is the shit) adblocking (never see an advert again) popup blocking.
you can do a hell of lot more with firefox than with IE - because it is opensource and widely popular, if there is something you want your browser to do, chances are someone else has already found a way.
