red beauty pls help id!

I found this tiny red beauty in a wooded area growing on the ground around a lot of bark. Location: Central fl. Weather conditions: temp 70 degrees f. hum 60%. size tiny!!! :mushroom2:

That's a Russula. There are lots of species of red capped Russulas and some are poisonous, so they should not be eaten. Yours is probably Russula emetica.

I find those all over the park I wander.. They stand out on the forest floor pretty good.. They are not active-

After taking a second look, the tiny size probably indicates that it's not R. emetica. In any event, it's not active, too small to be valuable for food, and is likely to be poisonous.

If we just go by it having a red cap and an all white stem it limits the choices to only 83 (yes, the actual number) possible Russula species in North America, according to Kibby and Fatto's key to the genus. And we can be certain that not all the Russulas have been described yet.

Without a microscope there are very few Russulas that can be accurately identified to species. None of them are active, some are edible, many are poisonous. There has not yet been a fatality from a Russula in North America, but there have been several in Asia.

The ones I've tried eating were not worth the effort to collect and identify. Maybe one day I'll find one that's actually worth eating or maybe find a way to cook them that makes them OK.

with a few exceptions, the edible rusulas might make a dandy substitute for those who find tofu *too* firm...
