I was growing namekos, and was infested with knats. I tried treating them with co2 from dry ice. It appeared to work, but eggs hatched and they were back. I tried freezing, but same thing. Someone posted about diatomacious earth, so I got some of that. By that time, I had a real collection of insects to work on. The earth is a very fine powder. I puffed it into the container, and they (the bugs)all died. I made a very thin casing, which deals with eggs. 2 weeks knat free! live is good. Diatomacious earth is non poisonous, and can be had from nurserys. It is about $5 for two pounds, which is a bunch. Don't breath the dust. I don't know the PH yet. All bugs hate it!!! including slugs and snails.
