Nvidia Or Ati? AGP Or PCI? Help Please (About Video Cards)

Heres the deal.

I'm currently looking for parts to build my own computer, I Currently Have (chosen):

Motherboard

Processor

Hard Drive

RAM Memory

(all links)

Now I need help deciding a vidio card.Something under 200 Dollars.
If you can please, find one from here

(or any other canadian store)

I need 256 MB of memory (minimum) and preferably under the 200 dollar price range.

Well you will need an AGP card as the mobo you choose does not handle PCI.

Whether you want nvidia or ati is really your choice and you should check out what exactly comes with each card as there are quite a few makers and the contents you could you sway you to a certain card. I prefer the older nvidia cards but the newer ati cards.

xfx is a good company. His board handles normal pci from what i see but not PCI Express. but of course you want agp instead of normal pci

PCIe will most likely be what all the new mobos goto for video cards so if you want a computer that is upgradable for a long time then PCIe is the way to go. Same goes for your hard drive, IDE is fine for now, but Serial ATA is where the future is heading. Get a 10,000 RPM SATA hard drive and it'll last you a long time, plus SATA is faster than IDE even if the HDD RPMs are the same.

www.sharkyextreme.com is a great source for hardware reviews & info, especially gaming related.

For the under 200 range I'd recommend an ATI x700 pro 256mb, on pricewatch for 194, Sapphire distributed cards tend to have the best bundles.

Or you could go for the Nvidia Geforce 6600 GT 128mb, or 6600 256mb @ 179 and 129 respectively.

(Just noticed you are looking for canadian, the prices I quoted are in US.)


They are both the newest generation cards from both manufacturers, both DirectX9 compatible. For the most part you get what you pay for in terms of performance, aside from the fact that Nvidia cards run Doom3 considerably better than ATI, while ATI runs half-life 2 better.

I am an ATI user currently and will probably try to get the x800 XT platinum when it comes down a bit in price, currently @ 500.
