New Top Video Card for games like Crysis for my Laptap!....Questions!!!!
    #7737773 - 12/09/07 06:46 PM (16 years, 1 month ago)

Alright for xmas id like to update my video card and get a geforce 8800 ultra/gts/gtx... whatever my parents can afford... because obviously i want to play games like crysis with full functionality and the graphics as they were made to look which require the top video drivers... now... which video card do you suggest of the 8800s i get... id like to have full functionality but i obviously cant afford the ultras... ill give you a link so you can see: http://www.nvidia.com/object/graphics_cards_buy_now.html

which card could i make the most of... ya know still get full functionality or near it but not pay too much money??? around 4 hundred i think i could get away with... lower would be better.. if higher is absolutely necessary then maybe... but yeah just get back to me and then we'll figure that out.

hopefully you guys know some of this stuff.. i never bought a video card before....

anyway... i appreciate it very much... thank you so much if you can help me out with this.

You don't just need a vid card to play Crysis at full specs. You need around 4 gigs of Ram and at least a 2.4 gighertz cpu.

I have 2 gigs of ram, a intel 2 due at 2.4 gighertz, and a evga 8800 gts 640mb. The game still lags. Had to turn down settings down to medium with a bit of lag. Gonna get another video card and go for sli and get 6 more gigs of ram.

If you just want a good video card then go for the 8800 gts 640mb.

Also, apparently there is a super high setting and most computers cannot run it. So you will have to spend a couple of thousand dollars and get the newest shit to run it at full specs.

Crysis is really out there.... It has basically set the standard for computer specs and most computers cannot run at it at full specs. I'm waiting for the summer to replace my CPU, add ram, get a second vid card and then play crysis at max. Prolly gonna install water cooling too, lol.

6 gigs of ram?

Doesn't there come a point where more ram actually hurts your performance? I'd rather have 2gigs of some expensive high performance ram VS 4gigs of crap.

Nope. Not on a 64 bit operating system.

Fuck yea. I got vista ultimate 64 bit.

It can actually support around 32 gigs if I recall but I don't know of mobos that can support that much plus they prolly would cost a shitload.

But yea... who told you more ram hurts performance?

ive got 2 gigs of ram and an intel 2 duo whatever.. i dont invest too much time in such things.. obviously .. haha..but yeah i mean i dont need to run it at full specs.. just enough so it looks decent enough.. i mean is it worth me having my main xmas gift be a video card... my current one wont even play call of duty 4 and obviously wont play crysis hahaha... but yeah...

also is it easily self installable for my laptap?

more ram could actually slow you down. the cpu would have to recognize each bit of ram in its own right.

any more than 6 gigs would seriously dent you. 32 gigs is for stuff like CAD.

> Doesn't there come a point where more ram actually hurts your performance?

Yes... potentially. (Small pages result in large management overhead, but fast page swapping. Large pages result in large delays during page swapping, but small management overhead. If you have enough memory that you don't swap, and your OS uses large page sizes, then (and only then) is performance not negatively impacted.)

> Nope. Not on a 64 bit operating system.

100% incorrect. The "bitness" of an OS has little to do with the overhead needed to manage large pools of physical memory. The "bitness" of an OS has a lot to do with the maximum size of the memory address space; however, memory address space size and management overhead are not necessarily related.

lol, i read a review on crysis the other day, where they actually custom built over 20 computers for the sole purpose of benchmarking with crysis. Not a single machine they put together (talking upwards of 10k) was able to run crysis at full resolution with all of the details at their highest settings. The one thing they mentioned was that it liked multi-core systems, and it liked vista. All other specs affected it just as you would expect (ram, video memory, etc).

Correct my if I'm wrong, but I think the 8800 is for desktops.

Or is there a version for laptops?
