Seems to work okay for me but have you thought about using DHTML for this?

Yea. I've done lots of animated/fading text in the past with javascript and DHTML/DOM... but problem is with that stuff is that the speed /smoothness of your 'animations' relies more on the client's browser and machine speed, rather than letting flash do all the work. Depending upon the user's browser type, you can have some unexpected results. Especially Netscape. I hate to favor microsoft, but I have to say, Netscape can't handle css for shit. I like firefox, but seeing as how it's sort of a mozilla spawn, I'm wondering if i'll run into the same problems with it as I did with Netscape.

I still love javascripting, but I'm just trying to get my hands more into flash/design.

Being a web designer is such a pain in the ass. You always have your clients telling you they want all this fabulous stuff on their site, and you have to explain to them that you have to program in the lowest common denominator to be safe. We programmers might as well officially change our job titles to (corporate bitches/bearers of bad news)
