A lesson in substrate depth
    #3589243 - 01/06/05 04:18 PM (13 years, 17 days ago)

Substrate depth is something many of us ponder each time we make a casing.  Everyone knows it's important to shoot for 2-3 inches of substrate, but I wanted to see how a casing turned out with much less.  This is 1 pint spread across a baking tin with no bottom layer, just verm on top; about 3/4 inch of substrate if that.  See for yourself how small these guys are-veils are already forming, haha! This is more like a casing of aborts then shrooms, but it's interesting to see these guys perform even on a "mini" level like this.

Be sure to make that substrate layer thick!

Click to enlarge, floss box in there for perspective.

To find a place to live between the negatives and positives.

If i had pics then this would be worth while...
Its been said before but ill say again.

Layers that are more than 6inches hurt more than help, I've noticed that 4 is about best, you can get several flushes w/ no probs in contams, about the 4th-5th flush contams....Plus the mushroon have more nutrients to grow i.e, bigger mushrooms, but as you all may or may not know
So the more nutes you have the more likely everything has a chance of contaminating...So while a thin layer is lacking a larger one may be over doing it...

Plus if it's too deep then the bottom layers dont supply any nutes, so they end up just being there for contams and not much else.

Good luck all, i hope this helps you in future grows..

And Holy, try for a second flush and see how that goes

Later and nice thread

I have to agree here is two half pints cased Less than 1in. substrate.

Abundant but small in stature.
IMHO two 2in. substrates kick ass over one 4in. sub everytime!

Getting the most out of your casings!, A pinning strategy.

Not what is overlay but rather what overlay is
