Substrate depth and surface area in casings
    #2994319 - 08/12/04 03:20 AM (12 years, 3 months ago)

I'm curious about the relationship between substrate depth and surface area but I haven't been able to find much info about it. Given this hypothetical situation involving three different casings, what relative results would you predict (yield, fruit size, flushes etc...)?

Each using WBS cased with coir/verm under identical fruiting conditions...

Casing A
Substrate: 1qt
Container: 5"x10"

Casing B
Substrate: 2qt
Container: 5"x10"

Casing C
Substrate: 1qt
Container: 10"x10"

I know this seems ridiculous as it does not consider the 10,000 other factors involved, but I'm hoping you guys can help clear things up for me. Any and all info would be helpful. Thanks in advance

I would say:
- "A" would likely work out rather average, estimating in my head that 1qt WBS in 5x10 area would be like an inch and a quarter thick. You would get decent yield if you count total of all flushes, and probably 5-6 flushes assuming conditions were near ideal.

- "B" would work out to being a super thick WBS layer, so you may have problems with the beginning and last few flushes, but you should get some pretty big fruits also on the middle flushes. Almost surely you'd need to rehydrate between flushes with a layer that thick though, so more work. It may be the highest yield though.

- "C" would have the best tradeoffs I think, a little over half inch or so WBS layer, and a large amount of surface area. So you'd get fewer flushes but more from each. Fruit size may be smaller though so probably it would work out about the same yield as "A", just quicker overall due to less flushes (more fruits per flush).

But I mostly am pulling that out of my ass. Lets see if I was anywhere near close to what others think. It's really a guessing game, which you already knew, so those are my guesses.

Thats exactly what I was looking for, thanks Spudz. Anyone wanna verify this?
