Substrate depth question
    #2899827 - 07/17/04 03:24 PM (13 years, 10 months ago)

Alright so i just cased some Malabars. I used PF cakes, crumbled over a thin ( 1/4 in) layer of verm. Then cased with verm/coir, my casing layer is about 1/2 in. and the total substrate depth is 2in. Does anyone think that may be a tad thin or will it work just fine? I wanted to use more crumbled cake, but they didn't go as far as i thought they would have. Thanks All

That should be just fine, for sure you'll get a better flush than if you'd just fruited the cakes. But I have to say that if you're doing casings, you should use grains if you can get your hands on a PC, they have less prep work than PF cakes and you can case them for yummy goodness, or spwan them to straw for mindnumbing results. Just two cents I found on the ground. Either way, props and good luck.

2 inches is fine. Don't go below that mark tho.. Casing layer should be around 1/4 of the substrate depth so you're on the mark.

With small casings like that, I usually just put enought casing to cover the substrate entirely.

So anyway, good luck!

.fs.
