When using dehydrated manure from tha stoe is it usually fresh and dried or is it nice and composted and dried. In other words will it smell like ass when pastuerized? And is it usually shredded nice and fine or is it clumpy and rock hard?

you can buy it in all sorts of ways. the deydrated kind i use is fine screened and smells like choclate (thats my opinion) when i sterilize it. i get it at the Big K-Mart down the street from my house for 89 cents per cubic foot.

You bastard. How is this thread less advanced than about a 1/4 of all the other advanced cult threads. You just moved it because you think I am evil.

200 woln't be too hot? I thought pastuerization was 160 to 180 F. I'll try the 5 to one thing.

for the inside to get up to 140 in the oven it has to be over 180. for example: a friend mixed dung and straw which was baked with foil on it for two hours. the temp in the center of the mixture (and all other areas) was around 130, not high enough for pasteurization. the temp needs to be at 140 for an hour for this to occur. my friend raised the temp to 200 and voila success. of course this is second hand info

OK but I'm sure some of it will reach 200. I think I'll do mine at 180 but I'll stir it a few times during cooking. Also temps on the oven can be wrong. A way to really test is to put a pan w/ some water in the oven and leave it there for a while and check the temp of the water.

OK. Cool. But was your oven like one of the dial ones or was it digital. Testing the temp with water is a sure way of finding the temp.

Typically a city boy i would say, i bet some of you think cows are pink or something. BTW cow and horse manure don't smell that bad, i handle mine with naked hands with no problem, just go to my lawn and colect the shit from "Highness", my horse. OH! Dry manure is the best! Cheers, MAIA

tom.. I've seen it wet & dry, compacted and loose. Seems to come every which way. You'll have to feel the bag @ the store before you buy. Of course it smells. The remaining water seemed to smell worse than the dung itself. Get a hot plate and big ole canning pot (wash basin maybe?) and do it outside. I pasteurized outdoors and afterwards left the pillow sack to hang over the stationary tub indoor to drain & cool. From experience, I'd recommend the pasteurization over sterilization for the dung. Just don't leave it sit around in that pillow sack before innoculating it. g'luck man.. BTW.. new folks, this is not a begginer's procedure. Have success w/ cakes or cased grain before trying to pull off the shit can teks.
Believe in yourself, keep an open mind and enjoy a spirited sense of adventure.
