ah it must not be working. Hang on. I'll post the column:

Generous Brits Donate ?1m an Hour

Britons moved by the shocking scale of the Asian tsunami disaster have pledged tens of millions of pounds to the relief effort.

The plight of the millions left homeless by the giant waves touched the hearts of the British public, with call centres receiving donations at the rate of ?15,000 a minute - almost ?1 million an hour.

A host of celebrities, including Atomic Kitten Jenny Frost, actress Michelle Collins and Breakfast News presenter Natasha Kaplinksy, joined call centre staff taking donations at London's BT Tower.

The total raised by the public stood at ?32 million early today, while the Government also drastically increased its contribution from ?15 million to ?50 million.

International Development Secretary Hilary Benn said Britain had now donated more than any other single country to the emergency appeal.

United Nations Secretary General Kofi Annan said he was "satisfied'' with the response by world governments, but stressed that UN resources were stretched thin and long-term aid was needed.

Officials heading the British relief operation described the fund-raising effort as "unprecedented'', but there were also stark warnings about the growing scale of the humanitarian crisis now gripping the afflicted region.

With the death toll heading towards 120,000, the UN warned that as many as five million people around the Indian Ocean lacked access to the basic supplies they needed to stay alive.

The World Health Organisation (WHO) described the tsunami as the worst natural disaster in the region for several decades and appealed for tens of millions in aid.

Meanwhile, the confirmed British death toll rose to 29, although officials admitted that the number of UK nationals still unaccounted for could be in the hundreds.

Dr David Nabarro, head of crisis operations at WHO, said the next few days would be critical in controlling any potential outbreak of waterborne diseases in areas affected by the giant waves, with incidences of diarrhoea increasing.

In Thailand, rescue and forensic teams fanned out across corpse-strewn areas in south of the country, in a race against time to find survivors and identify rapidly decomposing corpses.

The death toll there was put at just over 2,400, but officials warned this could rise to 7,000 as thousands more were still missing - the vast majority feared dead.

Meanwhile in Indonesia, new estimates suggested that around 80,000 people lost their lives - more than twice the 36,000 who died in the previous worst disaster, when the Krakatoa volcano erupted in 1883. In Sri Lanka, the death toll jumped to almost 25,000.

It's easy to think that most people here aren't somehow affected by this. It turns out that some of my girlfriends work colleagues and their families were out there at the time, some of whom they haven't heard back from. Despite not knowing them at all, I hope they're OK.

Sounds like the government doesn't want to be beat by the people, that's the way I see it. They should have just donated shitloads in the first place.

I haven't heard of the royal family making any major donation, or is their's included with the government's?

Woo UK
