So, I have been thinking about volunteering at a nursing home
    #3544481 -

Recently I've become acutely aware of how "set aside" and in many cases neglected the elderly are. This makes me very sad. I was thinking about volunteering next semester for the homeless, but now I think I'm going to give my services to the elderly. If I can make just a tiny difference for some of them, I will be happy.

What do you think? My husband has volunteered at a nursing home before and he says it was a real eye-opener.

My mother is a Special Care Aid worker, and she works in a nursing home. And I can speak from first hand experience that the elderly there get very good care. I've gone many times and helped play bingo, or whatever activities they had planned, it's fun. And a little sad.

My mum works with dying people, and has experience working in ghetto nursing homes. Really sad place to be, and you'd be a really kind person to spend time with them. I could deal with working with homeless people, but not old people.
Hope i never get old.

a friend of mine works for some in-home elderly services place and seems to really enjoy it. i guess i don't know you personally, but based on your posts here, i think you'd really bring a lot of joy into some poor neglected old peoples lives  just as long as you don't get frustrated easily, i think it's a great idea!

Volunteering at a place that's run for profit would seem a little weird to me. I'm not saying it's a bad idea, because I'm sure those old people would really appreciate it. But in a perfect world, the nursing home should make sure they aren't neglected as part of the "package."

I've known people who worked at nursing homes before and I've heard that it is sad and difficult. The difficulty comes with watching people rot away. I wouldn't be able to handle it. When I get to the point that I can no longer mentally or physically care for myself, I don't think I'll hesitate to blow my brains out.
