i got my zen today!

mp3 player, that is! my xmas present to myself came in the mail earlier today... gotta wait until i go to work tomorrow, because my computer here sucks too much to even try to install the thing... but it came loaded with a bunch of nice brahms and tchaikovsky so i got to test it out a bit. now who was it that said they got this thing to work with linux? i gotta search out that thread and figure out how they did it... otherwise i'll have to use winblows every once and a while to change my music on it. :smile: sorry just wanted to gloat a bit... from time to time i slip into horrible materialism, and then feel bad about it for days to come. anyways, anybody else get any early presents yet?

I've been juggling the thought of either a Zen or and Ipod.
In your opinion, what are its pros/cons? And why should I buy a Zen?

well, i decided on the Zen because I didn't want to deal with ITunes, and because i had read that it was easily linux compatible. i was also considering the rio karma, but CNet had a warning that they had multiple cases of hard-drive failure during their testing, so i said screw that. IPod is definitely the industry-standard, but Creative Labs has a website with constant firm-ware upgrades for the Zen, which I thought was a nice feature that might continually allow the player to use its hardware to the fullest. The Zen Touch (the model I got) has an interesting "touch-pad" method for scrolling, instead of IPods wheel - and just like a laptop touchpad, you can scroll really quickly or slowly, depending on how fast/far you move your finger. I thought this would be a good benefit for when you have 10,000 some songs on it... i got really tired of scrolling through only 5,000 songs on my ex-girlfriends IPod, so i thought this feature might be nice. As well, CNet alleges they got 24+ hours of life out of the battery before needing to recharge it (24 hours of continuous use!) - that sounded great to me. If you want to wait a few weeks, I can post a review of this player after I use it for a bit...

Oh and I was able to find this online for $218 (retail price is supposed to be $250 i believe) so that deal helped seal the bargain.

Zen Pros:

Replacable battery on NX and XTRA models (hardwired to motherboard in Ipods and Zen 2.0, Zen Touch)
Blue Backlight on XTRA (green on all others, not sure about Touch)
Better audio playback/support for Audible Lossless Encoding
Support for higher bitrate recording formats
Much cheaper than Ipod, especially used models
EAX Equalizer

Ipod Pros:
Some color, backlight screens
Arguably easier control scheme
More user-frienly interface, support (unofficially) for 3rd party additions (firmware)


I just got a Zen XTRA, which has a large (7-line) blue-backlit screen. I'm pretty stoked about it too, I upgraded the HD from 30GB to 60GB (something else you CAN'T do on an Ipod), and now I can fit my entire collection on one unit. It also cost exactly one third of the retail price of a similar-capacity Ipod.

Both are good units, I've just always been a Creative fan, and so far their player hasn't let me down.

super sweet!  i was gonna get an mp3 player but I opted for XM radio instead :grin:

now all you need is some heavy fuckin metal and you're all set :rockon:

Annnnnnd I had a light saber and my friend was there and I said "you look like an indian" and he said "you look like satan" and he found a stick and a rock and he named the rock ooga booga and he named the stick Stick and we both thought that was pretty funny. We got eaten alive by mosquitos but didn't notice til the next day. I stepped on some glass while wading in the swamp and cut my foot open, didn't bother me til the next day either....yeah it was a good time, ended the night by buying some liquor for minors and drinking nips and going to he diner and eating chicken fingers, and then I went home and went to bed.

Really early last friday morning UPS was knocking on my door ...Goobler had sent me a big Bar-B-Que pork roast from the Honeybaked ham company for a x-mas present...Man that was a ultra cool early x-mas gift :tongue:

No audio output on the zen per se, but the headphone jack works wonders.. unfortunately it's only stereo out, although the EAX effects (such as the Wide Spatialization, my favorite) simulate the sound of multi-channel output. Hope that helped..
