I've been out in my fields and it rained pretty hard last thursday. I keep finding what seems like to be deformed cubes that are scattered all over the place in the grass, usually not on the poo it self. I find good looking cubes right in the poo. They have a more yellowish type cap that looks similar to a regular looking cubensis, and have purple gills. The stem also resembles cubensis. I took a spore print and it was purple. I was just wondering if maybe they were less potent cubes or non-active.
Probably not cubes. There are Stropharia which resemble P. cubensis and Agaricus could also be mistaken for a cube.
It is rare for cubes to fruit from the ground instead of directly from poo. The easiest way to tell is the bluing reacting. If they don't bruise blue, then they are not P. cubensis, and they are not active.
