Oak Acorns

Hardwood trees are protected in my country. Oak Acorns however, can be collected from the ground. Can I use either part of the acorn to substitute wood chips? Which edibles or medicinals will grow on this substrate?

I think they are too nutritious(fat) to be used as a sole substrate. They are definitely no substitution for wood chip, if anything they might be used as a supplement, probably ground to flour.

Hi,

I don't know about acorns, but I do know that many edible/medicinals will grow on a variety of substrates other than woodchips. Other options include, but are certainly not limited too: Agriculturual waste, straw/hay, newspaper (w/ soy based inks), coffee grounds, cardboard, and anything else high in cellulose. I imagine the acorn fruit would be too "hot", i.e. high in nitrogen and other nutrients, but you might try just the tops of the acorns which are woody. You could also try edibles that grow on compost like the button mushroom or Coprinus comatus. Also, it is likely that you can get wood shavings/sawdust from anywhere that manufactures furniture, gun stocks, bowls, picture frames, mills lumber ect. Good luck.

I don't know how you would use it. It seems like something that I would
like to try. I will collect some acorns this week.

What kind of oak tree did that acorn come from in the picture you posted?

You mean the lower part, the small "cup"? I can imagine this could be very similar as using woodchips. yes.

Acorns are high in tannic acid. Google "acorn food preparation".

If you want to use the nut part, you would probably have to grind it, soak it in water to leach out the tannin and then dry it.

Acorns are high in tannic acid.

Mushroom mycellium should not mind this at all.

I have seen a lot of acorns that are colonized
by mold.

Mycellium does well on tea leaves straight or
as a supplement. Tea leaves even used seem
pretty astingent.

I'm not too concerned if it doesn't work,
just curious to see if it will.

If it doesn't work the tannins will prob-
ably be the culpret.

Mold and mushrooms are different. I've never seen a mushroom growing from an acorn.

I agree that you would need to leach the tannons out of them. If you were to use the nuts as a food source thats what you would also have to do.

Not that great of a picture. It is Potabella
grain added to acorns. The mycellium crawled
into the cracks and colonized acorns it did
not work well though. This is pretty much
as well as it did. It stalled out after
this.

I think the cups of the acorn should do a better job. Maybe some bran will help it.

I think you're right. I have found
acorns completely colonized by mycelium.
I don't know how old they were, they may
have had the tannins leached out before
the fungus started.
