Vermiculite/Perlite ???

I apologize in advance for a long rambling question:
I am trying to start on my first cultivation, and I have been reading the different teks (going on the advice of MMGG and PFtek for the first trials). My problem is that I have been to every *-Mart and Home Despot in the area and have been able to secure 1 source of perlite and 0 sources of vermiculite in the area. So here are the questions:
first, may I substitute perlite for vermiculite in the BRF/Verm formula, if so, are the ratios the same?
secondly, can I substitute packing grade vermiculite for horticulture grade? I just received a package at work the other day, which contained a sample that should not be exposed to water vapor (from Alfa Aesar if that helps). The packing resembled the Jiffy Mix potting soil I saw today which had the same looking shit in it. When I read the label, the potting soil said it contained vermiculite. I know vermiculite absorbs H2O, so I am assuming that since they look the same they probably are the same. Any Help here?

Tried a Lowes in your area for vermiculite? They should carry it...they do here anyway.

I have seen perlite sold at lowes just the other day as an additive to paint to give it texture. Be sure to check the paint section of hardware stores.
