Birch polypores and the Asylum (pics)

Went out to see what late bloomers we could find.  Most were now gone except the more durable shelf fungi.  Thus we have the Birch polypore (Betulinus piptoporus)




Interesting information on the Birch polypore:

The Birch Polypore is also known as Razor-Strop Fungus because it has a hard, leathery upper surface.  This surface can be peeled off in strips and was once used as a razor strop, which is a strap usually made of leather for sharpening razors.

The dense and corky Birch Polypore was used as a means to transport embers between campsites to provide the means to start a fire at the new location.

Oetzi was a 5300 year old Copper Age man found frozen in the Alps in 1991.  He had two pieces of Birch Polypore threaded on a thong around his neck. It is postulated that he used it as a medicine, as an autopsy revealed that he suffered from parasitic whipworms that cause stomach pain and diarrhea. The Birch Polypore contains antibiotic oils which act on mycobacteria, resins that attack whipworms and agaric acid which is a powerful laxative.  Ingesting the medicine would thus have killed the worms and purged his system.

It wasn't long before we came to the remains of one of our State Asylums.  So we decided to get some pics of the more than ominous buildings:






This building is modeled in the Kirkbride form. Kirkbride believed that mental illness was not be curable, and therefore he modeled his hospitals after prisons. This particular hospital was built in 1877. Today this State Hospital is empty, damaged by a fire in 1991.

it seems the polypores stick around long after they have died? there are some in the forsest behind my house and they are hard as rocks but they look like mushrooms still, no noticable rot or anything.
this post is interesting because here in northampton there are these huge old abandoned buildings that look exactly like the ones you have pictured, i guess i never really thought about thier history.

Polypores have a way of doing that everywhere. In spring you can still find leftovers from last year.
