CO2 Buildup
    #339770 - 06/13/01 08:11 AM (15 years, 4 months ago)

Since CO2 is heavier than air shouldn't I be able to put a 1/2 inch hole at or near the base of the incubator that would allow the co2 buildup to just fall/ooze out?

Yes, you can.

There is something called diffusion.

It causes that there aren?t really 2 layers of air and CO2, but rather a mix of the 2.
Therefor there is a slightly higher concentration of CO2 on the bottom than at the top of the contianer, but it?s negligible. The casings and cakes give off heat which makes the air/CO2 mix rise and circulate in the container.
I would even go so far to state that it is better to make the opening at the top of the container than at the bottom.

I've wondered for awhile now [but haven't done the experimentation] how much of a benefit you could get from placing your trays at an angle, say 30-45 degrees. Based on the 'heavier than air' model, the CO2 should just slough off; if Anno has it right, it might not make any difference at all.

Easy to test, though.
