Vulcanic rock is a good substitute. I've got some at the pet store near my house, it's used to decorate aquariums. The only draw back is that you have to break it into small pieces, i used a hamer. Hope it helps.

Cheers,

There is a company in the links section of this page that sells it online.

Can you subsitute the vermiculite for perlite? Vermiculite and perlite technically are used for the same purpose... Perlite however is extremely rough being that it's volcanic rock.

I wouldnt case with perlite. It will SUCK the water out of your substrate and put it into the air. Definatly not good. You guys should really think about ordering coco-fiber Grow-Bricks.

I agree Tlaloc, Gro-Brick is excellent! Perlite in the casing ANYWHERE sucks, even as a bottom casing layer. Perlite just get dry too damn quickly

VULCANIC ROCK USED IN AQUARIUMS WORKS!!!!!!!!!! DAMIT!!!!
Soon i'll post some pics of one jar with BRF+V.Rock, signs of growth in less than 4 days, 1 and 1/2 week later i have 20% colonization. Perlite is no go for substrate, it sucks up all the water. Sorry for the CAPS , bad day here!

Cheers,
MAIA

Ok... the website is great... it's got lot's of other stuff then Verm.... if you really want to find some and your on the east coast i implore you to take a drive around and out of your town and look for mom and pop garden stores. these stores usualy have regular clients who ask for this stuff regularly. As for vermiculite and perilite being used for "technically" the same purpose - i'd hate to burst your bubble but your wrong. Vermiculite absorbs water and holds it for your mycelium to suck out. Vermiculite does not "suck water up" it needs to be misted. When you think of Vermiculite you should think of a sponge (in essence). Perilite on the other hand absorbs water and eventualy EVAPORATES it. This is because Perilite is super porous. If you use it instead of Vermiculite as your top cake layer and in your cake mix ... the Perilite will suck up your water and evaporate it making dry, hard, and dead cakes. But that's only if your lucky enough for your Perilite not to contaminate- it tends to do that if you use it instead of Verm. As for the person who said it was stupid to put perilite on the bottom of a casing. Have you ever tried this???? Dont you know that it can be used to humidify your casings and/or absorb excess moisture when your working with dung based casings??? Excess moisture wich would normaly cause wet spots and rotting in these kind of casings??? Well, it can, and it does the job great. When casings shrink after successive flushes the perilite can be re-soaked to provide more moisture to the whole casing.
