Salvia bloomtime
    #3389972 - 11/20/04 06:32 PM (12 years, 20 days ago)

My beautiful salvias have started their bloomtime. They have bluish-purple flowers forming at the ends of their branches. Every year sometime close to Thanksgiving they start their bloom which continues, weather permitting, for about a month.  If the temperatures get too low then it's pruning and into the greenhouse.

Flowering isn't all that rare in the sense that it's not like the moon flower, but home cultivators are few and far between in reporting that their plant has flowered.

Could you describe for us the setting in which your plant is in?

And a pic would be cool too.

For Salvia plants to flower they need reduced lighting of around 6-8 hours (i think). But yes, please decribe your plants setting.

I have salvias inside a greenhouse and outside under a dense tree canopy. The outdoor ones are much more robust and are blooming now. My climate is hot and dry in summer and cold and wet in the winter. When temps. approach freezing I drag them all into the greenhouse, after pruning. They are somewhat stressed all the time. They have flowered for the last 4 years at about this time. I will post some pics tomorrow, if I can figure out how.

Gardentoad has sent me some wonderful pictures of his Salvias in bloom!

Here are some San Pedro, Peruvianus and Tershekii in his garden as well.

Thanks Gardentoad for the pictures!

It's seems like I've heard more reports resently of people getting their salvia to flower than any year previously. I'm sure that has a lot to do with the fact that each year more and more people grow it. There's a nice thread over at the Nook with pictures of someone else that had some salvia flower, though I don't think that this was the first year they had flowers.
