Tiny Substrate

My bird decided to that it was smarter than me and used these little plastic jars that are maybe 125ml. Put the substrate in and no it's almost 50% or more covered. But I think that there may not be enough substrate for casing, and the cake is moist but not solid. I don't think could leave it as a cake and the bird at least agrees that casing may be a good idea. Most casing teks suggest just a simple verm 1st layer, but there may not be enough nutrients. Could add some sterile soil I guess, was also thinking of just a spoonful of flour sprinkled on the top of the moist 1st layer. Birdy seems to like that one, that way he can have the leftover finch seed! Comments, questions, suggestions?

No flour, the casing MUST NOT be nutritious. Read http://www.shroomery.org/findorgrowthem.php?View=docs&doc=43

realising that shrooms are around 80% or so made of water, the concept of casing does not escape us. Birdy was just curious if there were enough nutrients to give birth, or does the nutrient content become moot after the initial mycelium has fully developed? There is no expectation of a huge crop, just a desire to get one cap to make a print. Abhort are always good too...

The seed alone should provide enough nutrients to support a flush.

You could take the colonized mycelium in your jars, break them up and spead them it out in a tray, cover with saran wrap and let it recover for two days, then pasteurize/pretty much sterilize some horse dung/straw mixture in your oven at 350 degrees for 1hr, and place that on top of the recovered spawn. Don't cover the tray at this point. When you see mycelium poking through the horse dung after about a week, you will want to cover the tray with saran wrap so that all the horse dung/straw gets colonized. If you put saran wrap on before you see mycelium popping through the top layer of compost, you will likely get contamination. When everything is pure white, it's time to place a casing. Pasteurize your coir or peat moss or whatever at 180 degrees for 1.5 hrs.

mucho appreciated, but I am so urban that the only horse dung I can find is... hell the garden center nearby doesn't even carry it! One of those things I guess they don't want hanging offa peoples balconies I guess.

btw, finally did find dung at the garden center. And it was called mushroom manure too! They hid it away, and from the smell, can see why. It's already supposed to be sterile, according to the package, but would like to sterilize it again, but the smell is a concern. Haven't actually opened the package yet, and that smell may have come from the steer manure that was beside it and leeching out. Just REALLY don't want to microwave or bake that "shit" and stink up the house.
