contamination
    #337014 - 06/07/01 11:03 AM (24 years, 11 days ago)

I removed the fruit cakes from the jars(some of them)before they started to fruit mushrooms, and I put them in the terrarium, but they were completly colonized. When some mushrooms came out green pathes appeared on the cakes,IS THIS NORMAL?ARE THEY CONTAMINATED?

Is it a dark bluish-green? If so, all it is is bruising and it is totally normal. The mushrooms are using up the water in the cake and the blueing is the result.

If it spreads, it is a contaminant... if not, then it
is probably bruising of the mycelium. My friend said she
usually would see bruising within 20 to 30 minutes after
birthing the cakes. Contaminants would either be visible
before birthing, or take a day or more to show up after
birthing. She said bruising looked anywhere from a light
bluish-green to an almost black bluish-green. Bruising
is fine, and will have little to no effect on your crop.

My friend suggested that first time growers should let one
cake go bad (away from all the others, in the garage, etc).
This way you have something you know is bad to compare the
unknown jars with. You might not get the same contaminants,
but you will be able to tell how much different they look
than normal healthy mycelium.

I also have some contaminate questions. Shouldnt we be doing this in the new forum that was just created for this subject? What was the point if we are just going to post this info where ever we want?

Tell me something good then I might agree with you..
