Government tyrany aside, you don't need a semi-automatic for self-defense.

What if you're a store-owner with no insurance, and there's a riot with a bunch of looters? Actually, a fully automatic gun would come in handy there.

Why? I'm not really for gunning people down even if they are stealing my property.

I'm sure a hand-gun or a shotgun would be a sufficient deterrent.

Do you think they'd think think twice about killing you? I'm speaking of armed looters, for the most part.

john lott's work is indeed fairly controversial. even some pro-gun rights researchers and activists have called his methods into question. i've been looking around and it seems like the criticism is pretty widespread. that coupled with his background and potential for bias convinces me that you guys are probably right and that his research here shouldn't be taken too seriously.

so i guess the question still remains: what effect does banning the public carrying of firearms have on violent crime, and what does it mean as far as policy goes?

I used to live in Miami in 92. When Hurricane Andrew came around. The Looters were completely rampant. I had a neighbor who got robbed outside his house for every cent he had took his watch. All through out the night you could hear gunshots. I knew someone who had brought down their friends from Ft. Lauderdale to help them with removing wreckage. They were outside and a guy came up to him with a huge knife. He was demanding their wallets and any electronics they had in the house not damaged. Well one of my neighbors had a revolver in his backpocket pulled it out and shot the motherfucker right in the face. The neighborhood thought he was a hero.

This whole thread is missing the point. What about the right to arm bears?

People should have the right to bear hunting rifles, and handguns that's it. That's all you need to take down game.

Government pushes to outlaw guns is a symptom of the 'babysitter government'. The basic idea is that the general populace is treated to be irresponsible, untrustworhty, dumb, and unable to think and asses risk situations for themselves, so the government assumes authority and the role of the 'nanny'. To take your guns away would be a bold step by the government to take away your guaranteed rights, and ability to defend yourself from oppresion, be it foriegn or domestic.

You American gun freaks are dumber than a cage of shit monkies. The government has f-16's and Apache gunships now, and terrorists these days blow themselves up.

I'm not trying to take down game. I want something that can take down a cop.

Well, I don't personally need a gun to take down a cop. But such guns should be available.
