My cat's 1/2 pint jar is almost 75% covered, but there is one tiny 1/4 inch round black spot against the glass. She didn't want to invetro or open the jar. It's nice and black, but there is tons of white, so the hope is that white will dominate over black.
Comments/ questions/ suggestions?

White dominating the black?! heh Anyways, you need to be careful with contams. because a lot of the time they grow faster than mycelium, regardless of how much mycelium is there. If you see it taking up more space within one day, you have to cut it out to save the cake. This would mean that you'd have to birth early and cut out the uncolonized portion of the cake as well.
For the sake of academics, the word you're looking for is "birth," not invitro. Invitro literally means "in glass." Your spawn prior to birthing is invitro. I hope I didn't insult you, that wasn't my intention.

I would throw away the contaminated jar. You don't know what metabolics the black contam produces. So your shrooms will end up containing crap you don't want!

so far, so good, the black thing hasn't become any bigger and it looks abit like just one vermiculite kernel was causing the problem. My cat decided to uncover 2 holes and turn the jar upside down.

When you don't see it growing it might be some verm. wich causes a black spot!
If cakes are fully colonised you probably can see if it's a contam or not!
