Any culture should be able to create nearly self sufficient communities if they would include Hemp in their main farm crops, but unfortunately the U.S. and it's lovie dubie corporate agenda effectlvely suppresses the planets most valuable renewable resource aswell.

So all the people employed by them aren't being helped? The consumers who buy thier products don't benefit? Being self-serving does not exclude helping other people in the process.

I recommend you do some reading on how alot of these sweatshops are operated, not only do most people not make half the amount of money needed to support a family, but the working conditions are absolutely unacceptable. Nobody should be forced into a position where they can either work in one of these prisons, or not working at all.

In case you didn't know, these people work there voluntarily. Yes, the conditions are rather abysmal compared to what we're used to, but for these people, it's better than the alternative. In many of these countries, cheap labor is all they have to offer, so they have no incentive to pay the workers the kind of wages Americans get.

I think the negative aspects, such as ruining the environment, paying workers low wages, and making some usless product totally outweigh any benefits corporations may offer.

Go shop at Wlamart. It's good for the pregnant teenage cashier AND the asian childern riviting lawn chairs together.

Your logic is flawed.

Incase you didn't consider this, these countries don't need american corporations to give them a place to work. The corporations are taking advantage of them by limiting their options and using them to maximize their own profit.

Try talking to pinky about the wages at corporate sweatshops vs. local sweatshops. The American companies pay better.

Did you ever see the movie "They Live".. Im thinking technological based societies are doing something like that. They are going to try and rob the planet of all its resources and then move on and do it again somewhere else. Well moving on is probably a nice thought.. They would probably leave a power structure in place and use humans for slave labor.

The fact that these organizations have proven to have basically no sense of morallity for the people working for them should be more than enough reason to feel the need to stand against them. What exactly are you defending here? Do you really think as you get higher and higher in the corporate pyramid the larger picture will be seen as something completely innocent with nothing but the employees and/or consumers best interests in mind? Sorry to break it to you, but up at the highest points of the government/corporate/millitary industrial complex is nothing but the foundation for a well dressed criminal enterprise.

I'm not saying that corporations are full of great, upstanding citizens. I'm saying you can't generalize like that. Not every corporation has the same business practices. And quit acting like working for profit is such a horrible thing. That's how the economy works: supply and demand. Corporations, when not subsidized by the government, will have to put out products that satisfy their customers in order to stay in business. Thus it is in their own self-interest to cater to what their customers want. Thus they can be self-serving and still help others. As for employees, try not to look at it from such an ethnocentric point of view. Just because you wouldn't want to work in a sweatshop does not mean that sweatshop workers don't. Corporations offer employment, and the people are often glad to accept. Now, it's true that the government sometimes intervenes on behalf of the corporations via subsidies and export processing zones, which is one more reason to get the government out of the economy. Without government help, corporations would have to play by the rules like everyone else. Corporations and the people who run them are not all evil, just human. There are selfish, cruel people in corporations just as there are in any sector of society, but for the most part, corporations provide products and services that people want. If you want to protest all corporations, then throw away your corporate-built computer, you fucking hypocrite.

nah..I think I'd rather put my corporate-built computer to good use helping get our voices heard - which sometimes isn't the easiest thing to do, especially through the corporate-owned media.

Your right corporations do have their place in society these days - there is no denying that. What is worth protesting however is the fact that many of these corporations are owned and operated by a relatively tiny cabal of people, who are always ready to buy out and/or rid of any and all competition to ensure they remain in control of the product demand they exist to fullfill. It is the basis for the completely tyrannical system that is being constructed around us, and if we are to just 'accept' everything, continue to play their game and go along with it, I believe in due time we are going to find out first hand how the story of 1984 can and will be dwarfed, literally.

The main reason corporations are able to run their competition out of business is because they're helped by the government via corporate welfare. No monopoly has ever come about without the help of the government. You want to stop corporate abuse? Stop the politicians who are enabling it.

Heh, funny how threads develop like that...do oil rigs use sweatshops? I haven't heard of them doing so myself.
Its interesting to think about capitalism and its implications though. It is certainly the most prevalent entity in todays global society, and some could argue that it as a method of existence has aquired its own self.
Overall I can't deny that capitalism has increased the apparent quality of life for us westerners, but it has also done some pretty fucked up stuff. I think that oil and other fossil fuel companies are probably some of the worst. Take the article I started this thread with for example. The very process of destruction that is occuring with fossil fuels (global warming) is allowing more fossil fuels to be harvested, yet no where in the article is this mentioned that the thing that they are trying to harvest was what is causing the problem and will only make it worse.

What about the case that is outlined in 'Breaking open the head' By Daniel Pinchbeck. Until say 40 or 50 years ago, there were many isolated tribes existing in the Amazon basin who had not had contact with any other people for thousands of years (well, not in person anyway). Each tribal community had, over this time, developed a precious and unique culture, practicing shamanic lifestyles and living in ecological harmony with their jungle environment.

Then sometime mid 20th century a bunch more christian missionaries managed to make it to these isolated pockets and began converting most of them to christianity (to the tribes who had never seen white people before the missionaries were very persuasive).

Then, in a few seperate tribes, some oil companies came in to the area wanting to drill. The gave the tribes some measley amount of cash, I think it was $700,000 US, in exchange for drilling rights on their land. Keeping in mind that these people didn't even know what money was let alone its value. This brought a highway through the jungle to the drilling site passing close by the village. Highway also opened up the ability for logging, etc. So what happened was that the missionaries put the people into a mindset that was more accepting of capitalism and control. This destroyed their original shamanic cultures and replaced this with the bible.

Now in these villages you can see the now elderly shamans holding on to their shamanic systems, they have given up hope, and some openly aknowledge that the spirits have fled their villages. You can see their grandsons wearing basketball shorts and Nike runners, sipping Coca-Cola and preaching the word of the lord to the new generation of their village.

Another example here in my own country, New Zealand - there is an 'energy' company Solid Energy who are about to begin making a new open cast coal mine in one of our areas of rare native bush land. Within this area is the breeding habitat for 2 or 3 species of endangered Kiwi birds, which do not breed if they are relocated to other spots. Its just disgusting to see such short sighted behaviours, especially when most of the coal is getting dragged off overseas somewhere to feed some massive factory for a year or two.

I think that these stories highlight exactly what the problem is with capitalism, as well as drawing some parallels with christianity. The problem with capitalism is that it is INVASIVE to many cultures and environments. It spreads beyond where it is welcome, and it always assumes that its way is best, so if anyone has a problem with it well they'll damn well be convinced otherwise, usually with cash payouts and pressure from the government. It leaves no stone unturned and has destroyed and brainwashed many indigenous cultures as well as doing a hell of a lot of environmental harm.

I would say sure there isn't anything wrong with a bit of this going on in the cultures that began it, but when it spreads globally like a rash to infest every pocket of exploitable anything, I think its getting a little out of hand. All part of the phenomenon that is humanity, I suppose.

I've come to view capitalism as morally neutral. It can be used for good or evil, depending on the dynamics of supply and demand. If we become more thoughtful consumers, we can use capitalism to bring about positive changes in the world.

capitalism is the devils wet dream... ok basically the world has been taken over by corporate mother fuckers. and its almost impossible to leave this bullshit lifestyle.. these bitches are everywhere... this draws me to a sighlty different philosophy which is, why are most humans so fuckng greedy and shit, why not live as a community why must we be bigger and better and have more then our bros and sisters... if the 90% of the wealth was equally split bewteen the 90%of poulation everyone would be pretty fucking set. there is no answer to this problem the problem is humans, but dont get me wrong humans bring beatiful things out such as art... communisim would be k3y if the leaders were not corrupt. and by the way fuck sweatshops and the owners should get their balls removed by a blunt razor. the owners are rich pieces of shit, if your gonna do buiness dont rip people off because there in a worst sustuation be faair...

i guess i can see some people going by social darwinsim.... but i say fuck that and fuck you if you think that... take care of your brother and sisters... i always hook up bums and shit if i got money on me... i do a tiny part in evening this gap oput... even thought i know a couple bucks is a chip off the fuckin mountain but if everyone dod their share everyone would be cool
