Netherlands Reports Anti-Muslim Incidents

AMSTERDAM, Netherlands - Arsonists and vandals angered over the alleged Muslim-inspired slaying of a controversial Dutch filmmaker have conducted a series of attacks on Islamic targets, including attempts to burn down two mosques, Dutch media reported Sunday.

Eight suspected Islamic extremists have been arrested in connection with Tuesday's slaying of Theo van Gogh, who earlier this year released a film critical of Islam's treatment of women. Among those arrested was the alleged 26-year-old killer, identified only as Mohammed B.

Though mainstream Muslim groups condemned the killing, it has caused an outpouring of anger in the Netherlands.

Vandals threw red paint Saturday night on an Amsterdam center that assists immigrants, many of them Muslim. Abdou Menebhi, director of the Emcemo center, several blocks from the spot where Van Gogh was killed, told AT5 television he "assumed (the vandalism) was done by a racist group of some kind."

In the town of Huizen, police arrested two men allegedly trying to start a fire at the An-Nasr mosque Friday night, the national news service NOS reported. A mosque in the city of Breda sustained minor fire damage in another reported arson attempt.

Earlier this week, a small fire was set at a mosque in Utrecht, police said, and a pig's head was left in a plastic bag outside a mosque in Amsterdam.

NOS reported Sunday that pamphlets with the image of a pig and a slur against Muslims were circulating in Rotterdam.

Van Gogh, a distant relative of the famous painter Vincent van Gogh, released "Submission" in August. The film was criticized as insensitive by some Muslim groups.

On Tuesday, Van Gogh was shot while riding his bicycle and then stabbed and had his throat cut. His killer left a 5-page note quoting from the Quran and threatening more attacks.

Of the eight suspects arrested, six remain in detention for the killing, including Mohammed B.

Judges ordered two suspects released Friday for lack of evidence, a decision prosecutors said they will appeal.

There was already a big concern in the political climate there about wether or not to allow or control the influx of immigration into the country.

It's a shame too. From what I gather, that is a beautiful place in many different respects. I would hate to see the free-ness of that society fall into a militarily controlled atmosphere.  Very sad.  :sad:

Yeah. Some guy makes a film exposing the enslavement by a particular group of half their population and gets killed for it. Slowly. Well, maybe that isn't exactly ignorance.

So, some Muslim extremests kill a film director who made a film they don't like, presumably with the intent to bring war.
Then, some Christian neo-nazi types threaten to kill Muslims who probably had nothing to do with the killers in retaliation, presumably with the intent to bring war.


It really warms my heart to see this kind of cross-cultural cooperation.  :heartpump: :heartpump: :heartpump:

If you open your house to rats some will be infected with the plague. Best to get rid of all the rats. Center for Disease Control policy prescribes quarantine followed by eradication.

You guys have to get out more.

I'd suggest visiting Barcelona (most multicultural city I've been to) for a while. Walk around for a couple weeks, get out of the pure-tourist trap areas. Buy some good food and talk to the people that sell it to you.

Alot of Muslims in europe are good entrepaneurs; Same in the US, though more are probably technical workers in the US.

Middle eastern food is some of the best affordable food in the world. You go in a restaurant, be polite, and people for the most part will treat you ok.

Not only that, but Muslims aren't any more of a homogenous group than Christians. Pakistanis and Moroccans aren't the same at all.

I immagine that I'm wasting my breath on you, but whatever you think of the religion itself, most Muslims in Europe and America, and I strongly suspect that the same applies in their homeland, are good people. Same as with Christians.

Now, some Christians are hatefull biggots. Same for some Muslims. But, that's just the way it is.

they are HARD workers where i am in canada as well. tehm and "orientals" seem to be the hardest working group around here. good work ethic, but some of the buisness men are downright brutal.

THE HAGUE -- The government vowed tough measures yesterday against what a leading politician called ''the arrival of jihad in the Netherlands" after a death threat against a Dutch lawmaker was found in a letter pinned with a knife to the body of a slain filmmaker.

The five-page letter, signed by a suspected terrorist group, was released Thursday by the justice minister, and forced political leaders to take on bodyguards. Dutch authorities arrested nine men in Tuesday's slaying of filmmaker Theo van Gogh, all of whom are tied to Islamic militant groups. Two suspects have been released.

Titled ''An open Letter to [Aayan] Hirsi Ali," it referred to a Somali-born member of parliament who scripted Van Gogh's film, ''Submission," which criticized women's treatment under Islam. Hirsi Ali, who says she is a former Muslim, is now in hiding.

''We are not going to tolerate this," Deputy Prime Minister Gerrit Zalm said. ''We are going to ratchet up the fight against this sort of terrorism. The increase in radicalization is worse than we had thought."

Jozias van Aartsen, parliamentary speaker for the right-wing free market VVD party, said: ''The jihad has come to the Netherlands and a small group of jihadist terrorists is attacking the principles of our country.I hope the Netherlands will now move beyond denial and do what is fitting in a democracy; take action.

''These people don't want to change our society, they want to destroy it," he said.
