All of you should check out the dvd KOYAANISQATSI and then tell me what you think of our Earth and what we as a human civilization have done to it. It's so really really good.

A friend of mine mentioned how we are the only animals who don't adapt to our environment- we adapt it to us. Deep thoughts as your trippig and look at all the junk that we surround ourselves with in the little hole that we carve out for ourselves in this world that we've built.

But seriously, check out the video. There are two other ones if you're interested, but I like this one the best.

My goal in life, which I made public to my friends/family some time ago, is to live sustainably. It nearly sickens me to think of the great divide between what we take from nature and what we give back. I doubt if anyone reading this, right now, can state that they are personally living a sustainable life.

I like to joke about running off to become a hermit...but that's not really what I'm after. However I do need to find some land where I can be sustainable. Unfortunately sustainability comes at a cost in this society - you have to give up society. Our consumerism is too rampant to take ANYTHING from society and still call yourself sustainable. The only answer is to refuse most, or all, of what society can give you...and just get it on your own. It's really the only way you can be sure that what you take is balanced by what you give back.

If we all went off and became hermits where would be now. Nowhere, livin in some shitty shack till the ripe old age of 30 when we die of the common cold because we dont have medicine. There would be no precious internet, which all of us here obviously use. No computers, tv (whether its a good or bad thing), no recorded music, nothing. Im sorry but you have to be part of society if you want any of the shit that you use to have fun, stay alive or whatever. You just have to accept this and make your life the way you want it and forget all the negative shit. You have to look on the bright side since not all of society is bad.

I would give it all up in a second if I was gaurenteed a spot somewhere in nature maybe with some friends.

I just go through these days in disgust almost looking around at everyone. All of them so caught up in it all, all the lies and acts they put on everyday that obviously aren't who they really are.

I don't think anyone here is saying EVERYONE should take off and become hermits.

That still doesn't mean some of us can't!

the longer I'm in college the more I realise how downhill this world is going - it scarses the crap out of me. If everyone wasnt so fucking greedy and money hungry we'd be a lot better off. My answer is do what you know is right, help other people out and the escape will come to you when the time is right.

Well it would be nice to somewhat live off the land. But being in a society allows us to work together and get more accomplished. By doing this we can increase the quality of life. I hope one day I can aid in our advancement. I love advancements in science/technology, however I know they can be good and bad, its simply how we use them. The only solution to eliminate the bad is by not buying into the bullshit even though its all around us. The first step in vanquishing it, is by not accepting it, and you have to do it on your own and pretty soon others may too and eventually it will change.

But how do you know that isnt who they are? To each his own, maybe you want a simple life off in the wilderness, but they want a complicated life. As a matter of fact the reason they get caught up in it is because this society is so ridiculously complicated and even the smallest things that we all take for granted are very involved. Look at electricity for example, its readily available to us all yet we forget people worked very hard and long so that we can have it. Why run away from society anyways, why not change it and try to let people understand the way you feel and maybe one day they will understand it too.

Also I feel the more we advance, the less we will destroy our world, well environmental wise, because we can discover less harmful technologies. Simply look at all the environmental safe appliances and products we have now. Not to mention things such as how we are improving in the area of automobiles with gas mileage and emissions and whatnot. Either way I dont see rejecting modern society as a good alternative. For me personally I couldn't live without music and for one I can't play any instrument for shit so I need society for that in one way.
