CASING

I am growing PF classic on rye grass seeds for the first time
and was wondering if a casing layer was necessary on the bottom. I will be using a 50/50 mix of peat moss and vermiculite for the top casing and was thinking of using perlite as the bottom. What should my ph be? Can I just lay out my substrate case it and put it in my terrarium or should i wait to put it in until it shows growth again? DO different strains offer a different "trip" and which strains offer the biggest bang for the buck? Thank you all for your help and thank you Shroomery for this great website.

The bottom layer is not required.
The pH should be around 7(+- 0.3)

But if you ARE going to use a bottom layer, perlite is the way to go :)

What does this bottom layer do? I have read The Mushroom Cultivator and I don't remember it saying anything about this layer. I would assume it holds moisture for the substrate. What is the advantages and disadvantages to this bottom casing?

Primorida,

If you are talking about "bottom layer" as in the bottom layer of your terrarium, then perlite is the way to go. If you are talking about "bottom layer" and in your casing, uer verm. I have found that perlite gets bone dry in a casing QUICKLY!

anno the verm layer on the bottum of a tray helps with thinly laid substrate especially thinly laid straw.

Perhaps with straw, but i have run tests with rye with and without vermiculite at the bottom and there wasn?t a significant difference in yield or otherwise.
And since the containers I use have a limited height, I abandoned the bottom layer.
