Yellow...
    #329907 - 05/30/01 05:19 PM (23 years, 4 months ago)

When I first innoculated my jars with thai koh samui spores the jars started to smell a little funky... like rotting food almost, and at all the inoculation spots there was a slight yellowing color. I thought that jars were contaminated but after leaving them for a few days the mycelium started growing. Does anyone know what that yellow stuff was, I think it might have just been a little yellowing from the water in the syringe, and the smell might have just been the rice itself. This shouldn't affect the mushrooms at all, should it?

If bacteria growth is present you will see eventually.
Yellow spots are no good but if it was lightning in combination with the sporeliquid it can't hurt!
Wait some time smel again!

There is indeed some yellow mold. But it is very easy to be seen. The yellow color it's sometimes normal. I did have some jars that turned a little yellow, and I was worried, but everything turned out to be just fine and the micelium started to grow!!! Cool!

Yeah dums.. that's what I think, it should be fine. It wasn't like a solid yellow ora nythnig.. just an aging sort of yellow, I'm not too worried since the mycelium is doing fine. Does anyone know how long it usually takes for mycelium to colonize a jar *after* it's started growing.

wait a minute...U said that it smelled like rotten fruit, that is bacteria. and just because it may look fine now it isn't. Foul smell is bacteria and it should be tossed out, why would U take any chances?? :frown:

If it doesn't smell bad now, that means the mycelium is winning and you don't have to worry.

if you felt a fruity or rotten smell ...it was a bacterial trouuble.
sometimes ,after bacterial growt, mycelium seems to restart its one....but if it is already contaminated there's nothing to do.
bacteria will slowly kill hyphae from the insider portion of the cake.

Good luck,anyway
