grain question

the faq says that polyfill need be applied to wbs jars so that the myc can get air exchange during incubation. the brf teks don't mention this and i was wondering if polyfill can be omitted and instead a couple layers of alluminum foil could be used to cover the inoculation site. i don't see why brf and wbs incubation would be any different but i needed to ask the experienced folks to make sure.

When you inject the syringe will leave a hole in the foil and then if you go to add more aluminum foil after the inoc it won't be sterile... it's better to use like a tyvek disc with your lids and then a bandaid on top of the injection hole (band aids come presteralized)

well, i've done it with brf jars many times with 4 inoculation sites each...never had a problem. also, a little isopropyl alcohol wipedown of the second alluminum layer should help the process out a bit.

That's because of the dry verm layer. Grain doesn't have that so contams are easier.

when you did this how did you seal your holes.. with more foil?
are you asking if you can do this with brf or WBS??

im going to assume your refering to WBS sine you say youve done it with BRF already.... i do WBS all the time and what i found that works best is to use some type of filer to allow air exchange. if you use only foil your going to seal the jar some no comtams get in (or atleast try to) by sealing it you dont allow for gas exchange and what not.
the cheapest, most effective tek that works best for ME was to use tyvek (free envalopes at the post office) cut into squares that overlap the jar opening and place metal ring ontop...just ring. then i place foil around jar and pc. when i inoculate i take the foil off and inoculate threw the tyvek and place 2 coffee filters over the top and rubber band to hold it in place.. i love this method cuz you dont restick air/gass exchange..

when i get bored and all my quart jars are being used i take my old half pint jars and fill with BRF and use the same tyvek method on them. i found that they grow alot faster then with the lids/foil.

I used a coffee filter first wich I inject the spores trough to prevent air contams and then cover it with foil

You can use a dry verm layer with almost any substrate and benefit.

TODAY, I bet if you use that dry verm layer with aluminum foil for your WBS you'll be fine.

I prepare the grains, put the filter and foil on and pressure cook it. I dont use tyvek at all. I use white tape (the ones you find in first aid kits) to make sure the coffe filter will stay put and dont leak in air from the sides. It works good enough for me :smile:

well thanks for that clarification all...i'm going to have to forget tyvek this time b/c i've already pc'd. i'll see if all goes well this time and if not i know what to do differently.

Right. And if you put enough in so that the needle can reach through the verm, and hit the grain, there's no chance of ever shaking it. Not to mention, there'd be more then usual so it would take longer to colonize and the grain isn't as dence as the brf mix so the verm would drop in the cracks anyway.
