hello can any one tell me if i can grow shiitake on black walnut sawdust. can get about a truck load if it will work  :confused:

have never heard about someone growing shiitake on walnut sawdust but if I were you I would try out to grow them on that kind of sawdust in a mycobag.
If shiitake does not grow on it you could probalbly try oysters ...

for some reason myc colonization does appear to happening im using popcorn no contams that i can see the only thing i can see is the sawdust spawn seems to be doing ok but rejecting the popcorn.. any hints?

just wanted to say that i'm getting growth on my black wallnut but my popcorn is way ahead will be going to a bulk substrate this weekend let ya know how it goes

ok ragadinks thanks for the help got 4 pints how much bulk should i do and should i passturize or steralize since shiitake take so long to colonize? any help would be great .

I would sterilize the substrate.
Stamets recommends 2-3 hours at 15 psi in a small pressure cooker for supplemented sawdust .
If you do not have the possibility to sterilize the substrate properly you could try the peroxid method: http://members.aol.com/PeroxyMan/.
