Black Walnut & Sawdust Storage
    #14322925 - 04/20/11 12:56 PM (12 years, 9 months ago)

Hello,
I have a source that can provide up to 50 gallons of free sawdust a week. Some of the wood used is walnut which i've read mixed things about. Some say it is ok to use walnut for growing shiitake and others say not to use it. If anyone has any info on using walnut to grow shiitake i would greatly appreciate it!

Also since i dont think i can use 50 gallons a week, how long would it store if kept in trash bags in my basement?

Dump it on the ground and store it in the open outdoors. Leaving moist sawdust in a bag in your basement is asking for mold.  Keep it in the sun so it dries out. Aged sawdust is always superior to fresh anyway.  I've not used walnut so let us know how it goes.
