small size flowhood or medium glovebox
    #3226469 - 10/07/04 09:19 AM (12 years, 1 month ago)

hey!

ive been thinking reacently about doing myself either a small flowhood
or a medium sized glovebox and came across two different ideas.

i'd be interested in the choice of the omg about that.

1.) a small hepa flowhood

the filter would be a astrocel 1 hepa, nuclear grade, quite good filter.
the measurements of the filter would be pretty small though : 12x12x5 7/6"
plus shipoping this item would be 80us dollars.
i'D also need a blower, the ones i need would add about a 100 to 150 usd.
so plus materials id hit abour 250 - 270 usd to be on the safeside.

2.) medium glovebox
pvc box XxXxX any size possible - around 20 usd
gloves and tape and everything else - 10/15usd
total: around 40 usd as absolute MAXIMUM (good one already)
can also build boxes for free -> cardboard ones/plastic containers everything ..

well, im aware of the fact that the flowhood would give me superbe
working area and keep it all sterile but the huge difference in price
is what matters.

sow hich one would u decide for given that u simply wouldnt have any space
for a large flowhood :frown:

peace ohm :mushroom2:

*edit*

i just found a thread thats also real useful right now
here the link:  link

*edit2*
to provide examples of what i could fixmyself for about 10 bucks
and being a sweet glovebox here:

as for the hepa i could fix myself with the SMALL filter,
the 12x12 filter, here:

the small hepa filter would make such a "hepabox" easyly i believe
and i think this thingy looks really usefull if u cared a little more
about the sealing in the upper section where the lid is on

what u think bout that?
peace ohm :mushroom2:

i would just go for the glovebox. flowhoods can cause air turbulences that blow bad air back into your jars/cultures.

I vote for the glovebox. The flowhood will come with time and dedication.

A small flowhood is a waste of time IMO. The advantage of a flowhood is a nice working area, if that working area cramped there goes that advantage.

I vote glovebox.

I to say a nice sized hepa glovebox. It's cheap and easy to build. All it takes is a small hepa unit, pvc, a shower curtain and a sheet of Plexiglas. Build a frame out of the pvc. Cut slits in the sides of the bottom pipes. Slip the Plexiglas into the slits. Run a bead of cock to seal it. With the pvc you can build 2 small frames for the arm holes. Then you just drape the shower curtain over the rest and glue it down to the pvc. Glue the gloves to the small frames, or cut holes in the curtain and glue them there. You are pretty much done then. You make a port for putting everything in however you like. Put your hepa unit in and your stuff, turn it on for 10 minutes and your ready to open jars.

The port I am planning on for mine will be the same size as my casing trays with flaps of plastic hanging down so I can have the tray hanging below it. Then I just tape the plastic to the tray and it becomes part of the box. This is so I can use large or deep trays without wasting space in the box.

I quick and cheap self contained casing container is a small trash can. Dump your bottom layer, substrate then casing on it, cover the top with plastic wrap and your good to go. Lots of air space and room. You can even drill a hole near the top and glue a cheap spray bottle in it so you can spray without risking contamination.
