Cheap ass (albeit small) flowhood!

If you happen to be needing a small flowhood (say 1'x2') I have come up with a very good way to do it using your existing A/C unit (which most, if not all of us already have)

First off, my home has central air with floor vents. The easiest way to turn this into an effective flow hood is to get some inexpensive ducting and create a short (max 4') duct from the vent to a small 2'x1' plexiglass box. Make a spot in the back for a HEPA filter, attach the ducting to the rear of your 'flowhood,' and wala - no need for a blower, you've got one already!

I have also found that if you need to increase your CFM, simply close off any other vents that might be leeching off of the pressure.

It's a relatively easy way to make an efficient flowhood for small scale use. It is also lightweight and easy to store because there is no heavy blower attached. The most expensive aspect of the project would be the HEPA filter. The plexiglass can be bought at lowes for a very small price and caulked together.

Have fun if you decide to use this method

(if this doesn't belong in advanced, just move it - i just saw several other posts here about flowhoods and decided to put it here)

Cute idea. I may implement it. I even have some dryer duct laying around somewhere.

Good job!

It's an interesting idea, but the HEPA filter better work really well.....there are some nasty microbes that hang out in home A/C ducts.

HEPA filters filter out everything to .03 microns, so it should filter out damn near everything - just be sure to change your A/C filters regularly and make sure that they aren't too dirty before using your A/C hood

Of course a true flowhood will always work better, but this should satisfy anyone's need for a flowhood on a low budget level.

Make sure you use a pre filter to keep big particles from accidentally fucking up your HEPA filter. But, EXCELLENT idea.
