Flowhood prefilter
    #1800995 - 08/11/03 10:18 AM (13 years, 3 months ago)

This friend of of mine is constucting a flowhood, hes got all the goods, but a pefilter. He has been searching for furnacifilters and prefilters, with no luck. What could this dude use as a prefilter (has to be good, dont want to spoil the hepa right away)
Would polyfill wrapped around a wooden frame work?
hes going crazy, thought of everything else but the prefilte when he bought the goods, and now all he needs is a damm prefilter
Please help this dude

I use a pre-filter on our hoods. It is simply a washable furnace filter from Lowes. They have one that you can cut to fit any size and is washable and re-usable. It is not cheap, around $40 or $50 but it will last "forever" or at least way longer than the actually HEPA filter.
Good luck.

He needs to look online, and find a furnace prefilter.

Or he can use anything. A prefilter is just going to stop the bigger particles from getting into the hepa. You technically, could use a piece of blanket over a frame, or something of the sort. That might cause you to lose too much pressure though.

I wouldnt use polyfill either....you will lose even more pressure than if you use a blanket and your blower is likely to not like the pressure reduction....you could damage your blower and you will not get the needed cfm to have an effective flowhood.

In most of the US, you can buy furnace filters (by they way...if you go to the store where I live and ask them for a furnace filter...they will just stare at you and have no idea....ask for an air filter) at the grocery store in a large variety of sizes....They are disposable and cheap. Good luck.

Did a seach but can't yet find the one I mentioned before but I did find a similar non-adjustable one made by 3M
look here

Another by Precisionair

I will try to find the exact make/model next time I am at the store, I am sure it is available online.

polyfill should be ok or even an old tshirt. prefilters will extend the life of the hepa but are really only essential if your air is filthy

Just use any size filter, and duct tape it in place. Who cares if the sides overlap the intake? When the filter gets dirty, just rotate it to a clean area of the filter up against the intake. It works, trust me. All you're trying to do is catch the large particles of dirt and insects, to keep them out of your hepa filter.

He will be using polyfill wrapped around a wooden frame.

Ok, so he has found a mterial to use as a prefilter for his hood.
This is a carbon filter.
(the ones u use when u grow, to get ris off that nasty smell) He is thinking about putting this mateial on a wooden frame and use it as a prefilter for his new hood.

He wants to know if it would work?

I use a pre filter that i bought from Autozone..I use the one for a 1994 Chevrolet Cavalier...It`s a lot cheaper than most i have found anywhere else an it`s pretty cheap. It has a rubber frame with dense paper type element an you can buy bigger ones if that ones to small. I have an old heater i used last winter to keep my room warm an made a adapter to hold my hepa filter and the prefilter...Those auto filters catch a lot an dont restrict airflow...ck it out
