No I don't think Cheney kicked Edward's ass as hard as Kerry kicked Bush's. That was just brutal.

Uhhh......right, well hey, opinions and assholes man, opinions and assholes.

Edwards hardly stayed on topic at all. He didn't defend some of the kicks to the nuts Cheney gave him AT ALL

He stayed on topic as well, if not better than Dick did.

If I was Edwards I would have just made Cheney out to be an dark evil character that he is.

How? Say, "whatever man, you're evil" Or have the Darth Vader theme music?

I really don't think it was an ass kicking, but that's my opinion, and like I said above, opinions and assholes.

I caught the last 30-60 minutes and was surprised how even it was. At the point where Cheney brought up Edwards tax shelter thing. Edwards countered with "I paid all my taxes.. Haliburton did the same thing... etc.. Thats why tax loopholes should be closed.. etc." Basically it was Edwards loss for not bringing it up first and coming off somewhat defensive.

The gay marriage part was a blow to Cheney(actually moreso Bush). Cheney said that despite his family and his feelings on the subject he supports the presidents ideas about a constitutional ban. Edwards countered with, "this constitutional ban is ridiculous because for the last 200 years no other state has been required to recognize other states' marriages. Its just a political tool used to divide people and take their minds off more pressing matters...etc."
To which Cheney, in his 30 second rebuttal, only thanked Edwards for the kind words about his family. (In my mind Cheney was basically conceding to the fact that everything Edwards just said is correct.)

I didnt catch the first part so I can't comment on that, but overall I'd say what I saw was pretty even.

He was a CEO of a company so he has to be.

Come on now, intelligence is no prereq for a CEO position. The first example I can think of is the two or three companies GWB ran into the ground as CEO.

But the polls told us the truth, I'll wait to see what they say tommorow.

While probably more accurate than blind partisanship, I can't place faith in them farther than I can throw the pollsters.

I'm no politcal pundit, but the whole goal of the Bush campaign is to make kerry and edwards to be flip-floppers. Kerry and Edwards need to make cheney and bush look like dirty rotten corporate bastards. They are doing it, but probably not as well as they could be.

Frankie: Theoretically corporations should higher the best person for the job. Not any that I've ever known, but it looks like Halliburton is doing pretty well for itself.

I hope Cheney snaps and calls Kerry a terrorist sympathizer, then Kerry would win the election easily.

Ya. It sounded like he didn't really agree with Bush on that issue, but was willing to go along with it because he has to.

IFILL: The next question goes to you, Mr. Vice President.

I want to read something you said four years ago at this very setting: Freedom means freedom for everybody. You said it again recently when you were asked about legalizing same-sex unions. And you used your family's experience as a context for your remarks.

Cheney: Gwen, you're right, four years ago in this debate, the subject came up. And I said then and I believe today that freedom does mean freedom for everybody. People ought to be free to choose any arrangement they want. It's really no one else's business.

That's a separate question from the issue of whether or not government should sanction or approve or give some sort of authorization, if you will, to these relationships.

Traditionally, that's been an issue for the states. States have regulated marriage, if you will. That would be my preference.

In effect, what's happened is that in recent months, especially in Massachusetts, but also in California, but in Massachusetts we had the Massachusetts Supreme Court direct the state of -- the legislature of Massachusetts to modify their constitution to allow gay marriage. And the fact is that the president felt that it was important to make it clear that that's the wrong way to go, as far as he's concerned.

Now, he sets the policy for this administration, and I support the president.

IFILL: New question, but same subject.

As the vice president mentioned, John Kerry comes from the state of Massachusetts, which has taken as big a step as any state in the union to legalize gay marriage. Yet both you and Senator Kerry say you oppose it.

Are you trying to have it both ways?

EDWARDS: No. I think we've both said the same thing all along.

We both believe that -- and this goes onto the end of what I just talked about -- we both believe that marriage is between a man and a woman. But we also believe that gay and lesbians and gay and lesbian couples, those who have been in long-term relationships, deserve to be treated respectfully, they deserve to have benefits.

For example, a gay couple now has a very difficult time, one, visiting the other when they're in the hospital, or, for example, if, heaven forbid, one of them were to pass away, they have trouble even arranging the funeral.

I mean, those are not the kind of things that John Kerry and I believe in. I suspect the vice president himself does not believe in that.

But we don't -- we do believe that marriage should be between a man and a woman. And I want to go back, if I can, to the question you just asked, which is this constitutional amendment.

I want to make sure people understand that the president is proposing a constitutional amendment to ban gay marriage that is completely unnecessary.

Under the law of this country for the last 200 years, no state has been required to recognize another state's marriage.

Let me just be simple about this. My state of North Carolina would not be required to recognize a marriage from Massachusetts, which you just asked about.

There is absolutely no purpose in the law and in reality for this amendment. It's nothing but a political tool. And it's being used in an effort to divide this country on an issue that we should not be dividing America on.

We ought to be talking about issues like health care and jobs and what's happening in Iraq, not using an issue to divide this country in a way that's solely for political purposes. It's wrong.

IFILL: Mr. Vice President, you have 90 seconds.

CHENEY: Well, Gwen, let me simply thank the senator for the kind words he said about my family and our daughter. I appreciate that very much.

IFILL: That's it?

CHENEY: That's it.

Not selling out?

He didn't say anything but, "Thanks for the kind words about my daughter."

Cheney sold out big time.

Frankie: Theoretically corporations should higher the best person for the job. Not any that I've ever known, but it looks like Halliburton is doing pretty well for itself.

Yes, I agree. It just seemed at first you were inferring that CEO's are unequivocally intelligent. I do agree that Cheney is a smart guy, and I hate to say it but after I saw him tonight I view him less as an evil man, and more as a normal man doing in his part in an evil plan. He seemed to give off the vibe tonight that "this shit doesn't matter" apathetic, like a suburban teenager working at pizza hut. Can't really hurt him to get fired, and the pizza will still get made.

Though the last thing I would do is vote Bush. In fact you'd have to get Ron Paul or even McCain on the ticket to see me vote repugnantcan(pretty clever eh?) I am(probably) only voting Kerry to appease my morbid curiosity as to which angle Kerry will fuck us from. Maybe when our collective asshole has bled enough we will be ready for some actual change.

PS. I just got a job driving an empty Halliburton truck around the Iraqi desert.

on same-sex marriage:
Cheney can't openly oppose the president - it's part of his job follow the lead of the president. But, he still made his feelings on the subject pretty clear. The way he handled the question was worthy of respect.

as much as i hate cheney, that must have been a tough moment for him... oppose the president/jeopordize losing the debate/election... or side with his own daughter on live television?

thats gotta be tough!

I haven't seen the debates but I'm assuming both candidates did pretty good, but Edwards despite looking good, probobly got a little intimidated and defensive and Cheney probobly was looking down the whole time and not at the camera.

The best part was when Edwards broke the rules... twice. Anyway, I dont see how he cant sit for one debate and not brake simple rules. The fact of the matter is, I dont listen to polls to see who one an election because its based on how many people from each party vote in the poll. A CNN poll might have more democates voting because they have a lot of democratic reports and vice versa for other television stations. Personaly I think Cheney won because of his intelligence. Edwards still has his laywer speaking in his system and that hurts his case. He was trying to put on a show rather than give the issues. I agree that Cheney would make a great president, but I also think Edwards would be a better candidate than Kerry. Personally, I think Cheney won.
