my new seed charm/neclace/braclet help?
    #3208816 - 10/03/04 02:36 AM (12 years, 2 months ago)

i dont know if i can explian this very well but here i go.

i want to make a neclace or a braclet (or both) that is quite wide and do a design using seeds. i got it all figured and all, but here is my q. i was thinking of doing somthing like a croche (sp?) with the sorta screen liek stuff and string weaving it. use that as the backing and have a string going through liek a neclace but have t go through this mesh liek backing. then sew or attach a back onto that that is easy on the skin, jsut some sorta fabric.

im just wondering if anyone has ever done this, got any hints? i am definatly not for using glues and such, i want it to be more natural and very durable.

thanks for any help.

What type of seeds are you planning on using, ones that dry green or dry with nice colors? A pic might also help to get an idea.

err this is uhhh...well...hmm..shitty?

perhaps another go at explaining it. this time ill try and spell like a big boy.

ok, you know those carpets they make with mesh and use a whool type thing to make designs. i was thinking somethign liek that but using string to go through the seeds (or beads if its easier to imagine) and using a mesh type background to tie/weave them to. i am wanting it to be quite wide, liek a few inches.

picture a same size bead bracelet that is about 3" wide and the length of ones wrist. now jsut picture different designs, in my case very natural designs such as sea/sky/plants. maybe also think of it as a oversized friendship bracelet with beads.

man i know im not explaining it well, but jsut cant seem to put all teh pictures and thoughts in my head into words. ill try and draw out a better idea of what im doing.

Native americans did beading in a sence that way. Lazy stitch is one of the top of my head. But the used a peace of leather for this. I would suggest a nice peace of brain tanned leather for your project. Lasts long, looks good, and works good.

ya its the native americans that i stole the idea from   but i dont know much about what they did, just saw a few pictures.  so did they sew it to the leather backing?

im looking to do a nice quality peice that requires no glues or chemicals, it is to be 100% natural...just like that of the natives.  i think you guys know exactly what i mean now, you seem to anyway.  im gonna be tripping pretty soon so ill be drawing it then, see what comes of it

thanks fo rthe responses, keep them comig.  im going to hopefully be looking at some fabrics/leathers next week.  as long as tehy dont cost too much...i have some new unexpected car "payments" that is gonna set me back some so i gotta be carefull how deep i get into this.

Needle and good thread
tye a bead to the end. work width wise.
place desired number of beads on string, sew it and go back the other way doing the same thing. Look up lazy stitch, peyote stitch, suix stich.

Well if you want to make it all natural, mabie use some sort of vine bark to weave a twine like fabric?

ah yes one could use dogbane, milk weed, stinging nettle fiber, bass wood inner bark, hmm yucca leaf fibers. seperate the fiber into two strands, using whats called a reverse wrap you begin ttwisting the fibre in the furthest away bundle away from you while bringing that bundel over the bundel that is closes to you. Then take the other bundel and twist away from you while bringing it up and over the other bundel. The twisting away and wrapping towards you produces a durable strong tight twined peace of cordage.

wow i knew there would be people here that knew what they were talking about! thank youso much! would hemp fibres work? strong enough?

drawing is not my strong point so im afraid this is as good as its gonna get. i have some other designs but i think you get the idea. it will be in straight rows though so dont let the drawing fool you. i jsut didnt want to draw thousands of little circles. the other design i wanted was a mescal bean tree surrounded with peyote at the base with some sort of funky aura around the whole thing.

I am pretty sure i will use leather as a backing to the whole thing, jsut for a more natural but very skin friendly material. it will be fibres hopefully, depending how lazy i am, to do the seed work.

thanks again guys, you rock! and if ya gots any other suggestions...

You wanna do peyote stitch with small seed beads for the most intricate designs.

Hemp fiber could work well. flat peyote stitch by the way.
