Gymnopilus ID help
    #3201067 - 09/30/04 08:12 PM (12 years, 2 months ago)

Taking some board advice, i went to a local forest to search for Gymnopilus spectabilis.  I did find what i think is a gymnopilus, but there are many kinds, all looking very similar.  Maybe you guys can help.

Some notes : its been dry for seven days, so it was not a prime growth period.  Stained my hands orange. Spore print is rusty orange.

(im still new at this, so my description might not be as acurate as your used to. I'm working on it :smirk: )

-Cap

Bright Orange. Color far more orange than pictured when fresh.  Faded to a yellow over 2 hours. Umbonate/flat (can't really decide on this.  Has a bump above stem, but a flat cap). Width 2 cm on largest specimen. 2-4 cm. Edge inrolled very slightly. Low odor, somewhat mushroomy.

-Gills

Adnate. Close - Avg. Spacing. Orange in color, similar to cap when fresh.

-Stipe

somewhat central. 3 cm avg height. 3-5mm thickness. attached in clusters. fiberous and hollow

-Grouping

connected in clusters.

-Habitat

Found on a fallen tree, several clusters growing in space between inner wood and bark.  Clusters seemed to be exlcusive to one log.

here are they pics

damn!  they were growing in the right spot, too! just like nofindum suggested.  They were most certainly not fully grown, however, because some rotten, fully grown ones had a cap diameter closer to 6 or 7 cm. maybe they'd look different fully grown?

Nope they aren't gyms. I've seen em growing around my woods real pretty orange. I stumbled across 4 small gyms the other day surrounded by pins ( it hasn't rained in weeks the caps were old but the pins were just waitin) I picked a pin or two just to examine and boy did they blue. Like the entire pin blued. And the four shrooms I nabbed were orangish yellow and had a nice thick rusty orange spore print. The veil was partially there but looked like it had fallen off. Also there was some holes where a bug chewed through on a couple and it seemed around the hole to turn a slight blueish green tint. Smelled like old spice very pleasent.

Nofindum, do you think it would be worth to look in michigan pastures for mushrooms? One of the biggest pasture complexes in the state isn't 30 minutes away...

Mycena leaiana, Orange Mycenas. They are the most comon wood eating orange mushroom here in Ohio. I often find then growing on beech logs, and they fruit even when its too dry for most other mushrooms. They will stain your hands orange, but I believe the spore print is white.

Good news Vandago!  :mushroom2: I'll have to take a drive and check my spots this weekend. I have a feeling that after the first good rain they're gooing to explode.

Ya the spot I found has had loads of pins for a week or so and they stay the same size. I'm thinkin as soon as it rains they will begin growing. I'm pumped can't wait. Anyone know what all chemicals are in gyms, cause I was thinkin on mixin em with my subbs. Think thats a prob?
