Trying to get possible ID.
    #4503441 - 08/06/05 11:56 AM (11 years, 9 months ago)

I picked some mushrooms a little bit ago and need help with an ID. Sorry i dont have pics because my camera is in Indiana right now, but ill do my best to describe them.
The mushrooms were found in ohio growing in mulch mixed with manure. They have a bell shaped, greyish colored cap with a little yelloish orange nipple on the top. I can see lines from the gills on the cap, and the cap has a sticky film on it. The mushrooms have a thin hollow white stem, with no sighs of blueing as of yet. They have black looking gills, but i am still waiting on the spore sprint. I will post the color of the print when it is completly done. . There is black left on the stems though, so im not sure of the color yet.
Thank you.

Edit. after looking closer it apears that the cap is supposed to be white but i am seeing black throught the cap. i have found them dried up with white caps also. Forgot the mention, the mushrooms range from very small to somewhat big.

Edit 2. The sporeprint has finished and it is black.

Edit 3. i have just picked about 10 smaller mushrooms, and when they are small the caps curl up really bad.

Edit 4. The caps are infact white with a yelloish orange nipple on the top. The spores are coming through the little gill lines in the cap. Could this be because its raining right now. I also found 2 little clusters with about 15-20 mushrooms each, but the almost always grow by themselves, or in clusters of 1,2, or 3 mushrooms.

A black spore print would put it in the Panaeolus genus. That is a pretty good attempt at a description, but why can't people just read the ***PLEASE READ*** thread?
There are alot of details you left out that are critical for id. But it is safe to say your mushroom is an LBM, if your hoping it's subbalteatus, your description needs to be more accurate.

I have read the thread. I thought i had about everything i needed to try to get an I.D. except a pic. I am going back to indiana either tonight or tommorow, so if i keep the mushrooms in a ziplock bag could they stay fresh until tommorow night incase i stay here tonight? If they stay fresh i will get pics when im at home.

This is what I'm talking about:
Quote:

II. Accurate mushroom descriptions

It is critical that you describe mushrooms fully and accurately in order to get a proper identification.

A good picture of the mushrooms is invaluable, but not required.
Along with the pictures YOU ARE REQUIRED to provide the following data:

    * Habitat (where [woods, pasture, state, province, country, altitude] and what [soil, dung, wood (dead, living, what kind of wood?)] does it grow on)
    * Characteristics of the gills (color, attached/not, gills/pores, etc)
    * Characteristics of the stem (length, diameter, color, texture, hollow/solid, thin/thick, etc)
    * Characteristics of the cap (diameter, color, texture, conical/spherical, convex/concave, etc)
    * Spore print color (very important!)
    * Color that the mushroom bruises
    * Scent of the mushroom
    * Anything else you might find important

A little research will show that the relationship between the gills and stem are important as is a veil reminiscent. Is it a thin frail stem or is it kinda thick?
It really only matters if you want to get an accurate id, judging by you wanting to take them home, I suspect you would like to id these. But, I'm speculating
Plastic won't let them "breathe", it will hold in the moisture they're trying to loose and will probably form mold. Wax paper and a paper bag will probly hold them a bit.

Edit: there are special characteristics you need to pay attention to if you think they may be subbs. It's best to get these before they dry up.
I'm not bein a dick, just trying to help you out.

peace

Ok, and i understand you not trying to be a dick, thanks for the help. If they do dry out before i get home, do you think someone could still identify if they are subbs?

nope, we can't ID dried LBMs...

they're not gonna be subbs if they have white caps that you can see the gills through with orange tops...

maybe parasola (coprinus) plicatilis, judging by the description, look anything like these?
