giant puffball hunt
    #3142714 -

this years giant puffball (calvatia gigantea) season here is almost over, but in some places you still can find some.
when going by bike we saw this fairy ring in the field on the opposite hill, which is a sure sign that giant puffballs grow there when the temperature is ok:

When we came back with the car and searched the darker grass in the field we found some small to medium sized giant puffballs:

in austria, but I think you can get them almost in any country with a moderate climate.
Maybe also the PH of the soil plays a role - here they do not grow where there is limestone.
When I have measured the PH of the soil where they grew on I got a value of 5.0-5.5 ! That's a bit acidic I think ?

Damnit, I've never found these things.
I really want to find them and cut them up into "steaks," marinated them, then grill them.

yeah, the bigger ones easily can have double the size of these here.
But then even a couple of persons have their difficulties eating one at once - you always have to invite some friends or give part's of it to them...

I'm still finding these in MN, as they grow proliferously here. can these be misidentified? the ones i find look exactly like those pictured except that they have splits in the outer layer.

splits is when it matures it breaks open and lets its spores out .. to eat them you have to get em fresh before any spores are created inside

Only because of their size you hardly can misidentify them.
Have you got some pics ?

When they are still edible the surface should be smooth and when you cut them in the middle they should be totally white.
If there are getting yellow or even brown they have started to sporulate.
When they are really old only a dark brown sponge remains that looks like this one:
