my soundcard + linux

Hello. I just installed linux. I have a Creative Labs SoundBlaster Audigy 2 ZS. I was able to configure ALSA and it worked - sound was working great. But after a quick reboot, I got this message:
sound server informational message error while initializing the sound driver device /dev/dsp can't be opened (no such device) the sound server will continue using the null output device
...and then the sound has not worked since.
anybody know what the deal is? here is a link I've been referred to but I have yet to make sense of it: http://opensource.creative.com/sc_faq.html#ALSADrivers
hopefully I can get this card working...if not, ebay it goes.
thanks

You don't have a /dev directory or you don't have a /dev/dsp? /dev/dsp is a file which is used to communicate between the sound card and linux. Most of the dev filesystem is like this. If /dev/dsp doesn't exist then the kernel module that is for your sound card is not running/working. What is your experience level (could you achieve a kernel compile?). What distribution are you running also, 2.4.21 is fairly old. (just as /proc is for processes)

most creative soundcards have kernel level support so you dont need ALSA. I suggest looking into compiling your kernel and either loading it as a module, or hard adding it to the kernel.

mnd is right. IME ALSA is buggy as an episode of fear factor. even if you do get it working happily a future prog install is likely to shit it up again. of course, OSS (the module not the concept) isn't so hot either. YMMV tho

I always thought that Creative had the best support of any sound cards in Linux? You should try Linux Mandrake if you haven't done so already. It's kind of dumbed down distro, but hardware usually works fine right after install with minimal setup. I had trouble with some hardware in harder to use distros, but ever since I've been using Manrake I haven't had any problems.
