discoloration while drying

A friend of a friend (no really, It really is AFOAF) harvested some very healthy shrooms from his cakes (Yes, I am positive they were healthy). He did not take my advice and skipped the fanning step, and deposited the <very moist> mushrooms directly into a container of damp-rid. They turned from a healthy white-beige color to a dark blue-purple color (almost black --- not from blueing) within 2 days. Thay are now totally dry. My question is this: Assuming the discoloration is not from oxidation (I'm almost positive it's not, due to the darkness of the color), what would have caused the darkening? I know that bacteria can cause blackening, but this is a uniform darkening, and is not pure black. Plus, the fact that they were only dead and wet for 2 days and kept in dessicant for that entire time, leads me to believe it is not from rotting/spoiling. Anyone with similar experience? Did you eat them? Do you know enough about contams to rule it out? Help! I do not want to turn down almost an ounce of what I suspect are perfectly fine free mushrooms. Even educated guesses are welcomed. Thanks.

No. It is not blueing. As I have said above. I know what blueing looks like. It's REEEEAAAAL dark. And has a definite BLACKness. Does anyone else have an opinion? And no, saying that it is from oxidation (ie - normal blueing) will not help me, because I've already ruled that out. Thanks for any input you may have.

The same thing happened to me- I wanted to try cloning from this huge Ecuador growing out of a cased "dead" cake. (My first time casing- I wanted to practice on something that didn't matter, and was surprised when my "dead" 1/2 pint cake produced several more flushes of big beautiful fruits.) The cap opened up and started dropping spores, but I didn't have all the materials yet to clone it, so I picked it and put it in a container in the fridge to do the next day.
When I took it out the next day, it was a very very dark blue-black color (not like the blueing I'd seen on the other shrooms I'd picked) so I decided not to try cloning it. I did cut it in half and saw that the dark color was only on the very outside of the stem-the inside was still white- so I decide what the hell and ate it that night with a couple other fresh ones, and nothing bad happened to me. I don't know what it is, but I don't think it is harmful, so I say go for it and try them out.

I guess we can't help you, Dexter, if you've ruled out oxidation as the cause. Mushrooms turn almost completely black when Psilocybin is fully oxidized to psilocin. The rate by which the water leaves the fruit body determines whether you'll get oxidation or not.

Listen to Azure, ive had a batch do the same damn thing when i dried them, i DID fan them though, my shrooms were the same potentcy as normal, so i dont think that has something to do with it....
